Google is building a $0.6 billion large data center in Lenoir, North Carolina.
According to computerworld.com, this initiative will be conducive to employment and economic development in North Carolina. As a support and reward for job opportunities, North Carolina provided $4.8 million in funding for Google projects. Now, this large data center under construction is already promoting local economic development.
"Four hundred to five hundred construction workers are building Google's big data center near Lenoir's city center," said P. Kaye Renault, director of economic development at Lenoir. These workers live in a local hotel, purchase a variety of items in a local supermarket, and often visit a local fitness place ."
"This big data center is a big data center, and the workers often patronize nearby restaurants," says Renault ."
In January this year, Google announced the construction of a large data center in Lenoir, North Carolina.
Google is recruiting new employees for the data center. The positions to be hired include the data center manager. The applicant must have over 50 thousand square meters of data center management experience.
According to Google, the large data center will employ 210 employees. This number is similar to the number of people in the Lenoir municipal government.
Scott Millar, head of the Catawba regional economic development department, said Google's new big data center will boost economic growth in the region. Catawba is adjacent to Caldwell in Lenoir.
Mill said: "Many people think that there is a reason why Google chose to build a large data center here, just as Burger King's fast food will run near McDonald's. Catawba County is building a 200-acre data center base 20 miles from Lenoir City. This region was previously known for its equipment production and gradually fell victim to the impact of the overseas cheap labor market. In recent years, this region has become a production base for optical fibers, accounting for 40% of the world's total optical fiber production. In 1999, the number of employees in the optical fiber production industry reached 10 thousand, but with the development of the Internet, the number of employment dropped to half ."
However, Mill believes that it is not enough for Google to build a large data center in the region to attract other vendors. During the World AFCOM Data Center Conference held in Las Vegas, mill tried to promote the advantages of building data centers in Catawba and surrounding areas, hoping that more vendors could build data centers in the region.
