Basic graphics card knowledge
1. Video Card category
Almost all of the common graphics card chips on the market come from two companies, ATI and NVIDIA. I belong to Ati.
2. What is dri?
Direct rendering infrastructure (dri.sourceforge.net), that is, dri, is a framework control system that allows applications to directly access graphics processing hardware in an efficient and secure manner. It contains some modifications to X server, some client function libraries, and the system kernel. DRI is mainly used to implement quick and efficient OpenGL execution.
3. What is xgl?
Xgl is a brand new xserver layer attached to OpenGL. Xgl can execute complex graphic commands, such as rendering anti-sawtooth fonts, and the effect is much faster than the existing xserver without OpenGL. The currently executed backend program is xglx but will be xegl later. More importantly, xgl accelerates load composite operations and makes visual effects possible through composite/window management optimized for OpenGL, such as compiz. These visual effects have a wide range of practical applications, making Linux easier to use, and creating a workspace that is easy to understand and switch to for inexperienced users.
4. What is OpenGL? What is Mesa?
The standard definition of OpenGL is not pasted. It can be simply understood as a group of open function libraries with over 300 functions, just like glibc.
In Linux, OpenGL is used, and Mesa is used. Note that OpenGL is actually a standard, and there are a lot of products that implement it. In Linux, use Mesa.
5. What is glxgears?
Glxgears is a testing software that tests whether your Linux operating smoothly in 2D and 3D mode. This program pops up with three rotating gears. The screen will show how many grids rotate every five seconds, so this is a reasonable performance test. Windows can be scaled down, and the number of Gates depends greatly on the size of the window. If your display card is good enough and your driver works well, the gear will run faster. Some of the best graphics cards (SLI 6800 ultra) Run glxgears, and the gear cannot be seen clearly. Record the FPS number (frame speed per second) to identify the 3D acceleration effect.
Do I need to install a video card driver on my machine?
According to the document on the ubuntu.org.cn Forum:
1. ATI does not have an appropriate official Linux driver for graphics card of the old model, so if it is installed, install dri (although I do not understand why dri can replace the driver );
2. Some people say that the glxgears driver is not as good as the Ubuntu driver after installation. I tested it myself. The current FPS can reach 1175. It should be a satisfactory value, so I decided not to install it.
3. If you want to install, see http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/weblog.php? W = 55. There are other good articles on the Forum, such as http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/post-30022.html.
Can I install xgl on my machine?
According to the response provided by http://gentoo-wiki.com/hardware_video_card_support_under_xgl#ati_cards:
--------------------------------------------------
Radeon mobility 7500
Chipset: rv200 LW
Driver: 8.24.8
Notes: works just fine with kororaa-0.2-livecd
--------------------------------------------------
Barely. According to http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/weblog.php? The description in W = 55 can still be installed, and the strange thing is that after dri is installed to enhance the effect, it is not as effective as the previous xgl.
