Horizon View 7 released WIN10 Desktop III: Linked-Clone Desktop pool configuration

This article describes Horizon View 7 publishing Win10 desktops via linked clones, for the environment preparation and instant cloning section, see the first two articles in this article (Environment preparation: http://jiangjianlong.blog.51cto.com/3735273/ 1875591. Instant Clone Desktop Pool configuration: http://jiangjianlong.blog.51cto.com/3735273/1876060). Link cloning is a traditional feature of Horizon view, which has not changed much in Horizon View 7, and the configuration method is similar to the previous version. Let's start by recalling what a link clone is:

I. Introduction of link cloning

With View Composer link cloning, you can quickly create desktop images that share virtual disks with the master image, help conserve disk space, and simplify the management of patches and updates to the operating system. When we create a linked-clone desktop pool, View Composer generates a linked-clone virtual machine from a snapshot of a parent virtual machine, and then uses a linked-clone virtual machine to share a base system disk image, so the virtual desktop uses less storage space than a full virtual computer. About link cloning has more important three daily maintenance functions: Refresh, refactoring and balance, this is also highlighted here, but the focus of this article is to publish the WIN10 desktop, temporarily do not involve the testing of these three functions.

Refresh:

as users interact with linked clones, the cloned operating system disks grow. A computer refresh operation reduces storage costs by restoring the operating system disk to its original state and size.

The refresh operation does not affect the View Composer permanent disk.

when View Composer creates a linked clone, it takes a snapshot of the cloned operating system disk. The snapshot uses a unique identifier to label this link to clone the virtual machine. The refresh operation restores the operating system disk to the snapshot.

■ View Composer The time it takes to refresh a linked clone is only half the time it takes to delete and recreate the clone.

Refactoring:

in a refactoring operation, you can batch update a parent virtual machine to all virtual desktops generated through a linked clone, such as patching, installing or upgrading software, or modifying the virtual machine hardware settings for all linked clones in the desktop pool.

You can change the parent virtual machine without affecting the linked clone, because the linked clone is linked to the replica virtual machine instead of directly to the parent virtual machine.

Refactoring also refreshes the linked clones, reducing the size of their operating system disks.

refactoring does not affect the View Composer permanent disk.

Re-balance:

rebalancing distributes linked-clone virtual machines evenly between available data stores to conserve storage space on overloaded drives and ensure that all drives are fully utilized.

You can also use the rebalance operation to migrate a linked-clone virtual machine to another data store. Do not use VSphere Client or vCenter Server to migrate or manage linked-clone virtual machines, and do not use Storage vMotion to migrate linked-clone virtual machines to other data stores.

Confirm that desktop pool provisioning is enabled. When pool provisioning is disabled,View stops customizing these virtual machines after the virtual machine is rebalanced.

Rebalancing also refreshes the linked clones, reducing the size of their operating system disks. This does not affect the View Composer permanent disk.
