HP's new-generation wireless LAN technology can bring more convenience to enterprise lan. What is its core solution? Here is a detailed answer for us.

The HP ProCurve multi-service mobile (MSM) architecture will bring about a new generation of enterprise wireless LAN Solutions. Its innovative design not only allocates individual resources to management, control, and data forwarding layers, but also distributes network intelligence to wireless edges. The HP ProCurve multi-service mobile (MSM) architecture brings about a new generation of enterprise wireless LAN Solutions by integrating the centralized management and control advantages with the scalability, efficiency, and high performance of Distributed Intelligent forwarding. Its innovative design not only allocates individual resources to the management, control, and data forwarding layers, but also distributes network intelligence to the wireless edge to implement an optimized Wireless LAN switching system.

The core of this solution is the HP Procurve MSM 700 series controller, which is used to centrally manage and configure all wireless LAN services. HP Procurve Manager monitors and manages network switches and wired network ports. The MSM architecture inherits the advantages of the first-generation wireless LAN switch and eliminates the disadvantages of the so-called thin access point. As the name suggests, the TriPlane architecture includes three independent layers: management, control, and data forwarding. Each layer has dedicated processing resources.

TriPlane Architecture

TriPlane can reasonably allocate client traffic at the edge of the network to improve the efficiency and performance of the wireless LAN. Because the MSM700 only processes network control and management information, the Client Traffic reaches the destination directly from the source through the data layer. Therefore, they are highly scalable and cost-effective.

Data Layer

The data layer forwards data and implements QoS and security policies. A smart access point located at the wired/wireless border can forward data packets directly between the client and the server, without the need to use a central Wireless LAN switch. Local 802.11 MAC protocol processing, hardware-assisted data encryption, and RADIUS Authentication eliminate dependency on central resources. By implementing security policies, access points can block unauthenticated traffic at the edge of the network.

In addition, the data layer can detect and defend against Wireless LAN intrusion events in real time. The dual-base station model of the Access Point product line can detect and disable illegal device traffic before it threatens the enterprise network, thus building the first line of defense for the wireless LAN.

Control Layer

The control layer is the key to the TriPlane architecture. Through centralized control of the distributed data layer, the control layer ensures the consistent service delivery process of the entire Wireless LAN and implements strict QOS and security policies, thus avoiding the defects of the central Wireless LAN switch.

With the deployment and expansion of the wireless LAN, The MSM700 and Access Points can automatically discover each other and establish a secure 3rd-layer communication tunnel for the exchange of Wireless LAN control information.

In terms of support for real-time movement, MSM700 ensures fast and stable switching between wireless devices when roaming between access points regardless of whether the access point is in the same IP subnet. MSM700 understands its proximity to the MSM access point, so it can predict switching objects. Pre-shared PMK cache enables re-Association of WPA2/802.1x within 50 milliseconds, so that QoS and security policies remain unchanged during user roaming.

Management Layer

The management layer supports typical troubleshooting, configuration, statistics, and high-performance functions of a large network consisting of multiple MSM700 and MSM access points.

Network edge intelligence

The main advantage of the HP ProCurve MSM Wireless LAN solution is the improvement of the wireless networking mode of the previous generation of wireless thin AP, and the development of a smart AP that can be centrally managed.

This architecture integrates Wireless LAN traffic into wired networks, and uses the DDF method to distribute traffic through smart access points on the edge of the network. In this way, the traffic can pass through most direct connection paths (without passing through controllers) and optimize the use of high-speed backbone network links at a high cost.

Another major advantage of this architecture is that it ensures that the traffic of the wireless voice system (VoWIFI) is not delayed because it is sent back to the wireless LAN controller, but directly sent to the voice server, therefore, the quality of voice calls can be improved.

In addition, DDF supports 802.11n. You do not need to change the number of access points supported by the MSM700 series and their overall capacity to significantly increase the total available bandwidth.
