Installation

At the factory, the computer should have installed the system, ready for use. If you have not already installed the system, refer to the "Hardware installation Guide" or "Owner's Guide" that came with your computer.

Also, refer to "Owner's Guide" For instructions on starting the system, performing initial configuration, and adding new user accounts.

User interface

There are two common ways to enter HP-UX:

    • Use a graphical user interface (GUI) similar to the HP Common Desktop Environment (CDE), where you can use the mouse to click an icon to work, or use a text user interface to type simple commands in a text window.

The following is a brief introduction to CDE, however, this manual is still the main method in the future.

Cde

The HP public desktop environment is a powerful graphical environment that provides an interface for using HP-UX. Many of these components help users to use the system faster and more intuitively:

    • Windows allow users to run multiple applications at the same time.

    • A workspace allows a user to have more than one workspace.

    • Use icons to work directly with files and applications.

    • Front panel controls and the Toolbox help ease the use of applications.

    • The HP prompt Management program provides a number of online prompts.

    • You can easily customize the colors, fonts, and other aspects of the appearance and behavior of the workstation interface.

    • Multimedia (image and audio) applications can play, record, and edit audio, as well as capture and view images.

For more information about HP CDE, see "HP CDE User ' Guide."

After learning some simple ways to use HP-UX, let's go back and look at the text methods that don't have a nice user interface.

Multi-user System

HP-UX is a multi-user operating system that allows multiple users to use it at the same time. To avoid interference between users, most users cannot change specific parts of the operating system. Therefore, at least one user must have permission to change the system. The user is what is commonly referred to as "Superuser", "root", or a system administrator.

System administrator

The term system administrator is available in this guide. A system administrator refers to a management system, a user who is responsible for certain tasks, such as adding peripherals, adding new users, and backing up systems. In general, any problems that occur during the execution of the software can be addressed to system administrators (also known as system operators or "super users"). When visiting a system administrator, it may be helpful to have a bit of gift.

If there is only one user on the system, then the system administrator is the user. For help when the system assigns a user as a system administrator, refer to the System Management manual (especially the management systems and workgroups) that shipped with the system and other documents that may be installed on the system. In addition, depending on the technical support contract, HP technical support engineers can provide you with installation and maintenance assistance.

SAM

The HP-UX system has a management tool called SAM (System Management Program) that is powerful and provides complete online Help to guide users through System management tasks. Use SAM only if you do not have a system administrator. To start SAM, log in as Superuser, type/usr/sbin/sam, and then press Enter (see the next section for more information about performing this task). For more information about SAM, see the Management Systems and workgroup manual.

Trusted Systems

In most cases, standard-level HP-UX system security is sufficient to maintain information security and document privacy. However, some organizations or institutions may want to use a higher level of security. If you work in this organization, discuss with the group that you want to use the following optional features.

C2 level Security

The HP-UX system can be configured as a C2-level trusted system, the December 1985 United States Department of Defense issued "Trusted computer system Evaluation criteria" (Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria) part 2.2 (Serial number DOD 5200.2 8-STD) The system is described.

After the system is properly configured as a trusted system, HP-UX also provides additional security features, such as random access control and system auditing.

Security Policy

Security policy declares rules and enforcement methods that specify how sensitive information is managed, protected, and distributed by an organization. HP-UX C2-level security extends existing HP-UX security mechanisms and provides procedures and guidelines to help strengthen corporate security policies.

Hewlett-Packard C2-level trusted systems include the HP-UX operating system configured in trusted mode and the commands, utilities, and subsystems provided with the supported hardware. The application interface of this kind of system must operate normally, and meet the computing requirement of the system user. The security features of the system provide the mechanisms necessary to enhance the security policies of the Web site and to prevent attacks on system users and their data.

This manual will describe the C2 level security features as required.
