Article title: IBM: Linux will conquer the world. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
IBM, which has adopted the Linux operating system in its products, is now trying to convince other companies that the Linux operating system is worth using.

To further illustrate the benefits of the Linux operating system, at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo presentation, IBM moved out of four well-known users using the Linux operating system: clothing retailer L. l. bean, digital studio Pixar, Boscov's business chain store, and Salomon Smith Barney, a financial service giant.

Steve Solazzo, deputy director of the IBM Linux operating system department, said: before the world fully realizes its benefits, the Linux operating system is ready. Boscov's chief information officer Harry Roberts is a strong supporter of the Linux operating system and he also agreed with Steve Solazz's view. He said: Linux has left us behind.

Facts have proved that the Linux operating system is operating very well, and Boscov's has begun to add more and more features to its host, these hosts can work simultaneously as many independent servers.

Solazzo acknowledges that IBM has its own private interest in actively adopting the Linux operating system and promoting its further development. IBM prefers the Linux operating system because it can run on a variety of different computer systems, including IBM's four server production lines, the differences between these different servers can be reduced by using the same Linux operating system.

As a competitor of IBM, Sun Microsystems does not have to face the same problem. The company only has one chip production line, UltraSparc, and only one operating system, Solaris.

IBM once said it was planning to invest billions of dollars in Linux in 2001, but in 30th day of this month, the company said that in 2001, the company's investment in Linux has almost doubled compared with the plan.

Solazzo said that in the past 2001 s, IBM's sales of xSeries Intel servers and zSeries host products that applied Linux operating systems reached hundreds of millions of dollars. He also predicted that in 2002, the company's iSeries server sales profits for small businesses will also reach the level in the host market in 2001.

Three of the four households who spoke to IBM's business partners at the Linux presentation on the 30th applied the Linux operating system on their hosts. these servers are powerful, however, it was once believed that it would be replaced by Intel and Unix servers because of its high price. But now the use of hosts is increasing. Bill Zeitler, head of the IBM server department, said that the host processors sold by the company in fourth quarter of 2001 were almost all applied to the Linux operating system.

Among the four households attending the presentation, Pixar was the only one who did not speak on the Linux operating system on the host. Unlike the three other households, the company applied the Linux operating system to the workstation, enabling cartoonists to create their digital figures and make very complex results, for example, the facial expression of a character. So far, Pixar has installed 175 IBM IntelliStation Workstations for Linux operating systems, and the company plans to have 400 workstations, the news was revealed by Darwyn Peachey, the company's technical director. Darwyn Peachey said: By the end of March this year, we will basically replace the existing SGI workstation with IntelliStations.

According to relevant sources, Hewlett-Packard, who had similar success experiences on DreamWorks SKG, also plans to join the competition for Pixar business.

Patrick Carroll, a senior system engineer at L. L. Bean, said the company started to apply Linux operating systems in April 2001. At Best Buy, Patrick Carroll spent $60 on SuSE Linux and applied some of IBM's latest hosts for testing.

He said: the test results show that everything runs well, so we decided to apply the Linux operating system. The company's Linux operating system applications start from the e-mail system that sends messages to users.

Carroll said: "The experiment started from Monday and was put into production on Tuesday afternoon. Since then, the system has never encountered any problems ." He also said that the old Sun system can send five messages per second, while the Linux operating system host can send 30 messages per second.

He also said that in the future, L. L. Bean will apply the Linux host to complete more tasks, including WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Business Series, and information channels for accessing the DB2 database.
