At a press conference during the Linuxworld conference, IBM executives said that given Windows Vista's low speed and popularity in the enterprise, easy access to collaboration tools may prompt enterprises to switch to Linux.

IBM also hopes that preinstallation of middleware in Linux will break Microsoft's dominant position in the SME market. Jeff Smith, vice president of IBM's open-source and Linux middleware business, said at the press conference that customers except Microsoft products had no choice in the SME market. Smith said that the deployment of Lotus Foundations is very simple, just a few clicks.

Lou Esposito, managing director and chief information officer of Stradasoft, which distributes IBM middleware products, said that preinstallation of Lotus middleware in Linux would reduce the deployment time from several days to several hours.

Smith said that IBM is still working with hardware partners to pre-install Lotus middleware in Linux computer systems. The company plans to announce its hardware partners later this year. In addition, IBM plans to release middleware for Apple Mac OS later this year.
