IBM's new EGL tool: more powerful JavaScript?

BKJIA quick translation] One of IBM's current goals is to make it easier for developers to write JavaScript-based user interfaces without using the JavaScript language itself.

The company launched Enterprise Generation LanguageEGL community edition CE), an Eclipse-based development tool designed to simplify JavaScript development.

Although egl ce is relatively new, it comes from IBM's Rational Business Developer (RBD) solution, which has been commercially available for many years.

Unlike RBD, egl ce is free. According to a recent report, more and more developers of open-source projects are using JavaScript, so egl ce is of great significance at this time.

"Egl ce specifically targets a new Community-students, Web developers, PHP developers, and JavaScript developers", ibm rbd and EGL product manager Will Smith told InternetNews.com, "The main function of egl ce is to provide rich user interface encoding, and finally deploy JavaScript in EGL, and service-oriented service processing and data access will be deployed as a Java-based service"

Smith added that egl ce includes a visual designer and a smart editor, and the browser shares a debugger with the service-based processing method. Commercial Version RBD products can generate the COBOL language and RPG-based business processes, which are not included by egl ce.

The goal behind egl ce is to support richer development methods. JavaScript-based user interfaces can be developed without writing JavaScript code, and Java-based services do not need to be written. Smith pointed out that the actual terminal products, namely the Code directly provided to users from the server, will still be compiled into standard JavaScript and Java languages.

JavaScript is not exactly the same language. Different Web browsers use different versions. This gap makes it necessary for egl ce to handle it differently.

"We designed egl ce to be capable of compiling EGL code into different JavaScript versions, including the JavaScript versions supported by the most popular Web browsers ." Smith said.
