This article describes how to install ubuntu with vmware in win7.

Graphic Demo environment version:

Local system: WIN7
Virtual Machine: VMware Workstation 8 (English version)
Installation target: Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS (click here) first download the iso image file

Detailed process diagram:

0. in the initial screen, click "Create a New Virtual Machine" (Ubuntu on the left is an existing development environment Machine, please ignore it)

1. click "Custom (Custom )"

2. no need to select, directly Next (the above is the compatibility of the Workstation version, the default here is the current version 8.0, the difference in the previous version is limited), such as less memory, HD Audio is not supported)

3. select "I will install the operating system later"

If you have no strict requirements, you can select the second "Installer disc image file (ios)". then VMware will automatically learn that your iso is Linux (Ubuntu ), you only need to enter Full name, user name and password, and other simple user settings, but this is an Easy install, as VMware said in the original article "When the New Virtual Wizard detects an operating system that supports Easy Install, the wizard prompts you for information about the guest operating system. after the virtual machine is created, the guest operating system installation is automated and VMware Tools is installed. "I think this OSAutomaticInstallation is incomplete, leading to some problems such as unavailability of core commands and no response. Therefore, if you have higher requirements, you cannot select this option and need to install it completely or in a custom manner.

4. select "Ubuntu" under Version. Note: For 64-bit Ubuntu, select the "Ubuntu 64-bit"

5. set the virtual machine name (that is, the name displayed in the upper-left corner of VMware each time), and then select the desired installation path in WIN7 (the default is disk C, which is inconvenient ).

6. Number of processors (Number of processors): 2

I am an i7 processor and have good configuration and no pressure. I feel that dual-core is better than single-core (if it is not used, VMware won't design it like this, but it is unnecessary for more ), there should be no need to choose the one below. if you have a good understanding, please leave a message to us.

7. select the memory size and use the automatically recommended 1 GB memory (8 GB local memory ).

In a virtual machine, the students should not be able to run big programs with high memory size not equal to fast, but put more data into the memory rather than the hard disk, programs and systems with high memory consumption will become faster. When I completed my undergraduate course last year, I changed the memory of the VM from 1 GB to 2 GB, and the result was actually slowed down. It should be because Windows 7 was occupied.

8. select the Network Type. the default "NAT" is selected this time"

Note: Here is my experienceVery importantNote: If you use "NAT", you need to use a wire to connect to the Internet in WIN7 to access the Internet in Ubuntu (as Ubuntu is your real OS, no need to manually configure any IP address information ),Wireless connections cannot be used by default.. This may cause trouble for some laptop students. Of course, it does not mean that you cannot solve the problem by configuring IP addresses manually. to avoid the trouble of configuring IP addresses each time, use "bridged" to bridge the manual configuration directly.

9. by default, click "Next"

10. click "Next" by default"

The third item is to directly divide the hard disk for the virtual machine, which means to bypass the WIN7 folder management and directly use only one hard disk space for the virtual machine. if you have advanced needs, you can choose.

Therefore, note: the default one can easily implement copy and move, when you want to copy to another person, or change the machine.

11. select the disk. by default, click "Next"

12. select "Store virtual disk as a single file"

The box above indicates that 20 GB will be allocated to the virtual machine now. if not, it will continue to increase with your usage at (the same as not selected ). If there are not many virtual machines installed on Windows 7, or the hard disk space is too large to store things, optional.

13. select the location of the D disk as the storage address of the VM file.

14. click "Finish" to complete virtual machine configuration.

Click "Customize Hardware" here and you will have the opportunity to reset the Hardware settings (number of processors, memory size, etc.) of the virtual machine that you are not satisfied, you don't need to click cancel again. In fact, you can change the configurations of virtual machines at any time in the future.

15. after that, we can see "Ubuntu 12.04" in the upper left corner. Don't worry about Power on. ubuntu is not installed yet...

Click "Edit virtual machine settings"

16. in the pop-up settings, click "CD/DVD (IDE)", and then click "Use ISO image file" on the right ", then select the path of the iso image file for Ubuntu 12.04 that you downloaded.

Click "OK ".

17. start the VM and click "Power on this virtual machine" in step 15. then Ubuntu 12.04 starts installation. select the language and then click "Install Ubuntu"

18. if "Download updates while installing" is selected as the installation process, Install the latest update directly. if you select "Install this third-party software" as the third-party software

19. select "Something else" to manually partition the 20 GB hard drive of the VM.

20. click "New Partation Table" (create a partition Table)

21. in the pop-up dialog box, select "Contunie"

22. select the new free space and click Add"

23. note "Primary", "Beginning", "Ext4... "Are default, do not need to modify; number is the size, in MB (note: do not pursue 1024, the hard disk is actually not neat ...), Select 10000 = 10 GB. select "/" from the "Mount point" drop-down list. click "OK"

Note:: "/" Is recommended to be 5 GB or above. (Based on multiple articles about "Ubuntu manual partitioning)

Note:The last time I got a 6 GB package, I went into libraries and it was full. it was a tragedy! Therefore, do not think of ubuntu as 5G or above. ubuntu should occupy 4 or 5G, but at least 8G or above. 20G is indeed not big, however, if you are planning to be a long-term employee, you should not use Virtual Machines. you can run 20 GB of programs, more than enough. if you are familiar with them, come back to the truth.

24. select "free space" again (as shown in step 22) and click "Add". Note that "Logical" and "Beginning" are default values, and the size is 1000 (1G ); select "swap area" from the drop-down list of Use as. note: the last drop-down list is gray, indicating that the Mount point is not selected for the swap area. click "OK" to complete this step"

Note:: "Swap area" refers to the swap partition. the recommended size is 1 ~ of the physical memory ~ 2 times. (Based on multiple articles about "Ubuntu manual partitioning)

It does not need to be too large. 1 GB is enough.

25. select "free space" again (as shown in step 22) and click "Add". pay attention to "Logical", "Beginning", and "Ext4... "Are default; note: The size is also default, that is, all the remaining space. in the final" Mount point "drop-down list, select"/home "to complete this step, click "OK"

Note:: "/Home" stores the data of common users. it is the home directory of common users. the recommended size is the remaining space. (Based on multiple articles about "Ubuntu manual partitioning)

Note: do not change the order of the three partitions, because/home makes it easy to select "available space" by default at the end to avoid manual allocation.

26. now, all partitions have been completed, as shown in. Note: If you are not satisfied, click "Revert (restore)" to re-partition until you are satisfied and accurate. If you are satisfied, click "Install Now"

Note: for a tragedy map, 6 Gbit/s is not enough. this figure is not updated and is for reference only.

27. select your time zone and automatically adjust the time. it is inconvenient to manually tune the time during Renewal. Then, click "Continue" to Continue.

28. select US for the keyboard. Generally, this is the case for computers purchased in China. you can choose one as needed.

29. for personal settings of Ubuntu, enter the user name and password as needed.

30. the installation is complete. click "Restart Now" to Restart Ubuntu.

31. stop on the following screen and press "enter ".

Now, the installation process is complete, and we can go to the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop.

Note:Because automatic installation is not used, our virtual machine does not contain VM Tools, which leads to the failure of full-screen virtual machines. Therefore, we need to install VM tools. Please search for details.
