As a large office suite, the embedding and invocation of data between functional modules of OpenOffice (OO) is essential and a manifestation of the powerful functionality of the Office suite. So how do you implement calls between individual functional modules in OO? How many ways? In the last phase of the Linux Office series, the author introduces the commonly used methods in detail and illustrates them with examples.

OpenOffice method of invocation between components

  1. Direct Copy method:

Direct-tone usage is the simplest, as the name suggests, to copy and paste directly, such as a professional persuasive document that usually requires a chart to visually demonstrate your point of view, which requires you to put a table or chart in Calc into a writer document. Select the diagram you want in calc, select edit → copy of the menu, and then select Edit → paste in the appropriate place in writer to paste it.

Tips: Everyone commonly used the shortcut key "Ctrl + C", "Ctrl + V" in Linux as inherited its usage, more convenient.

  2. Insert Direct object method:

Although the direct copy method is simple, but must start the corresponding function module separately, is more troublesome, the simpler method is uses inserts the object method to invoke, the concrete method is as follows:

First place the cursor where you want to insert the object, then select the Insert Object button on the left main toolbar of Oo to eject the Insert Object Floating dialog box, which lists the objects you can insert, inserts the object you want directly, and then pops up a simple interface for the corresponding functional component. Edit the object in the interface until the object satisfies the requirement. Finally click the document space to make the different objects integrated.

For example, insert Calc-made tables in impress, typically using slides in annual summaries or financial situations, simply select the CALC worksheet in the Impress Insert object floating panel, and then adjust the position appropriately. Such an accurate slide is made (see Figure 1: Inserting a Spreadsheet object in impress)!

  3.OLE Object Method

There is more powerful than the insertion object method, the simpler and easier way is to insert OLE object method, the advantage of using this method is to directly edit any OO function module created objects in the document, and high degree of fusion between objects. The most important thing is that you can use an object saved in a ready-made file without having to open the file. Greatly saves the time, enhances the office efficiency.

The specific methods are:

Select OO Main Menu "Insert → object →ole object", then, in the dialog box where you inserted the OLE object, select how you want to insert the OLE object (you can choose new or from File), and select from file when you use the icon saved in a previously made draw document. Then select the file to insert directly into the new document.

If you choose to create a new object, the editing window for the corresponding object functional component appears in the current document, making it easy to make new objects and opening them in the appropriate functional modules.

For example, insert draw WordArt in Calc:

Inserting WordArt into a spreadsheet is a useful way to beautify a document, but not if you use the Insert Direct object method because there is no ready-made draw object available. However, the use of OLE objects can be easily implemented, the implementation of the method is: first complete the production of the spreadsheet, select the OO main Menu "Insert → object →ole object ...", and then choose Draw from the pop-up dialog box can appear in the cursor position familiar Draw window, Then the operation is exactly the same as in draw (see Figure 2: Inserting WordArt in calc).

Little knowledge: What is OLE object?

OLE is the abbreviation of object linking and embedding, literal translation is to connect and embed, the friend who has studied VB may know that VB has a kind of control is called OLE object, through this control can call other format data. In fact, the use of OLE technology in the office is to meet the user in a document to add different formats of data needs (such as text, images, sounds, etc.), that is, to solve the problem of building compound documents. OO OLE is exactly the same as the above concept, but with more sophisticated component technology, this bridge makes it extremely easy to implement the mutual invocation and collaboration of each functional module in OO to create a compound document.

Let's take a look at the impress to insert an already draw icon:

The author in impress to make a slide, to use the previous draw in the production of a Linux inside logo file, the most convenient way is to use OLE objects, other methods are more cumbersome or unable to implement, you need to start the appropriate program to open the file. By using an OLE object, you can easily invoke an object in a file by selecting "Create Object from File" in the dialog box that inserts the OLE object (see Figure 3: Editing an object in a file in impress)!

OK, openoffice the calls between the objects are here, and I hope everyone can use the powerful features that OO provides to create professional composite documents.

  Conclusion

OO serialization to come to an ending, through the study of this series of articles, we now know that in Linux for day-to-day office work, as fast and efficient features, but also with the Windows system does not have the stability. Open your oo and start your day work on Linux!
