When you listen to other people talk about Linux, FreeBSD and even OS2 and so on novelty operating system, is also want to try to see? But when you hear the need to cut the hard disk, the original data may be lost, whether there is some hesitation? I was in the Linux door for a long time, until I found VMware. Because it ensures that Linux can properly install and operate properly, without destroying the original operating system, for us to remove the trouble to study how to partition the hard disk is reasonable and efficient distress. Next, I'll show you how to use this software to install Linux.

First, the installation and configuration of VMware

Simply put, VMware is a virtual machine software that can virtualize a new subkey on your existing operating system. This machine is built on the operating system you are running, and it has its own independent CPU, hard disk, memory and various hardware. Of course, these are all fictitious. It is worth mentioning that the virtual hard disk is actually a file on the machine, you can arbitrarily partition, format, install the operating system and other operations without the original system will have any impact. The size of the memory used by the virtual machine, the size of the hard disk, etc. can be adjusted according to your needs.

1. VMware Download and Installation

You can get VMware's installer from a lot of software download sites. Here, I recommend the following two Web sites:

(1) VMware's base Camp www. VMware.com

(2) China Virtual Machine Forum www. Vwware. cn

Note: The installer has a for Windows and for Linux, please download the correct version. My host is Windows2000 Server, download the installer is vmware-work-station 14. 5. 2-8848. Exe.

VMware installation is simple, you need to remind you that after installing VMware, you must first go to VMware's website to fill out the information to obtain a 30-day trial registration code. 30 days later if you do not want to buy the official version of the registration code, then you have to log on to VMware's website to obtain the next one months serial number.

After starting VMware, its main interface is shown in Figure 1.

? Xml:namespace PREFIX = V/><? Xml:namespace PREFIX = O/>

2. Configuration of VMware

Once VMware is installed, it allows you to build multiple virtual machines, and each new virtual machine will require you to create a configuration file. This configuration file is actually equivalent to the "hardware Configuration" of the new computer, and you can determine in the configuration file how the virtual machine's hard disk is configured and how large the memory is. What kind of operating system you want to run, whether you have a network, etc. The steps for configuring a Linux virtual machine are as follows.

(1) Select the "typical" typical installation by selecting "New Virtual Machine" under the File menu and clicking Next when the wizard appears.

(2) Click "Next", select "Linux" in "Guest Operation system" of the operating system interface, and click the version corresponding Pull-down menu to select the specific Linux edition, where we select "Red Hat Linux".

(3) Click "Next" to enter the installation directory selection interface. The text box above the interface is the name of the system, keep the default value, the text box below needs to select the installation location of the virtual machine operating system.

(4) as needed, click the Next button to set up the virtual machine memory size of the interface. Linux9. o Memory requirements are: Text mode requires at least 64MB, graphics mode requires at least 128MB, the recommended use of 192MB. Here we choose 192MB:

(5) Click "Next" button to enter the network connection mode to select the interface. VMware has four kinds of network settings, in general, bridged way to make a virtual machine like a network of a stand-alone computer, the most convenient and easy to use (four ways to connect the network can refer to the different information about VMware). Here, we choose the brided way.

(6) Click the Next button to enter the virtual disk settings interface. Here are three ways (create a new virtual disk, use a existing virtual disk, a physical disk) to choose from, recommend beginners choose "Create a new virtual disk" , which means creating a new virtual disk, which is just a standalone file for host-bu.

(7) Set the disk size in "Next". Here, we adopt the default 4GB.

(8) Click "Next" to enter the file storage path selection interface.

This interface can be set by clicking the Browse button. Here we use the default values and click the Finish button.

At this point, complete the configuration of a virtual machine.
