Article Title: Linux partition Quick Guide. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

What partitioning method do you usually use when Windows and Linux are started on both sides? Will you leave a separate partition for/home? Why do some people put/boot into a partition? At the beginning, many problems have plagued everyone. this Guide can answer some of these questions and demonstrate some partition modes that can save your space, reduce the trouble, and solve the online data loss problem.

What I will particularly mention is that we should not only talk about how to partition, but also why. There are many reasons. First, the partitioning methods for different systems vary widely, and I cannot know which method is best for you. In addition, to be honest, I do not want to take responsibility for the loss of some video files due to partition errors.

Tip: For simplicity, all charts in this tutorial are based on a GB hard disk and do not display swap partitions. If you follow the steps below, you may need to add a small swap partition somewhere. I usually put it at the end of the hard disk.

  Windows dual-start

In the correct partition mode, it is easy to install dual Operating Systems in Windows. If the partition mode is incorrect, it may be troublesome. Note that many versions of WINDOWS want to be the only operating system in the system. WINDOWS usually prefers to stay in the first partition of the first hard disk, rather than in other places, and it will not hesitate to eliminate everything there in its own way. If you know this in advance, you can let Windows occupy this position (the first partition of the first hard disk) before installing Linux, which saves you a lot of trouble.

For example, we have allocated 50 GB for Windows in the first partition of the hard disk. Install the Windows system first. Once it is fully installed, you can directly install your Linux System in the remaining space. In this way, all modern Linux systems will see Windows Installation and automatic addition to your boot menu.

/Home

One of the most common methods to install Linux is to isolate/home partitions. This has many advantages. First, it limits the space used by user files. The most important thing is to keep these files isolated. No matter what happens to your system files, your home will be independent. This also means you can reinstall all the operating systems, but your applications and desktop settings still exist.

For example, if you are running Ubuntu 9.04 and/home has its own partition, you will save many files in home, as well as desktop settings, Firefox bookmarks, and conky configurations. If you decide to reinstall or upgrade, you can clear the entire operating system and leave a complete home directory. Once the reinstallation or upgrade is complete, your files and settings will be the same as when they are retained.

You can also adjust the partition size as needed. If you don't want to install too many programs in your root partition, you can reduce it to 10 or 20 GB and leave the remaining parts to the user file, and vice versa.
