Although the Linux system development time is not long, but the Linux system is more and more popular with computer users, resulting in many people start to learn Linux, learning Linux, you may encounter the Linux network card installation problem, the Greek game system College will introduce the Linux network card installation problem solving method, Take it out here and share it with you.

The first step: Configure the operating parameters of the Ethernet card

Configure the network card is to configure the operating parameters of the network card, such as port address, interrupt number. The default parameters of the network card are generally stored in the internal EEPROM network card, which is set up before the factory. The default parameters are possible in most cases, but if these parameters conflict with your system and the network adapter does not support software dynamic settings, then you need to use the NIC Setup program. Not all network cards have to go through this step, because some network adapters support the driver software and its input parameters to determine the operating parameters of the network card. This can be determined by looking up the card usage instructions.

The Setup program for the NIC is different from the driver, and the Setup program is used only to modify the settings in the EEPROM of the NIC. The NIC program itself may run under other operating systems, such as WINDOWS95/98, OS/2, DOS, and so on. If you are a non-Linux platform, then you should install the network card in the system suitable for setup, and set the network card parameters according to the setup instructions. Then install the NIC on the Linux system.

Step two: Install the Linux system

If you are installing an Ethernet card that is not installed on the Linux system itself, try installing the NIC while installing Linux. The prerequisite for this success is that your Linux distribution contains the drivers for the NIC that will be installed.

Run the Linux installer and follow the prompts, and don't forget to install the core network section. When you go to a LAN configuration, Setup lists the types of all the network cards it supports. See if your network card is on the list. As Linux distributions continue to escalate, RedHat6.0 has already covered the usual types of network cards. If you are lucky that your network card is in it, then many of the steps discussed below can not be considered, the installation program will automatically complete the installation and drive the network card. But don't worry if you don't find the type of network adapter you're applying to, and continue to the next step.

Step three: Manually install the network card

Installing the NIC is the driver that installs the network adapter. Network adapters must have drivers to work, and the more mature the driver, the better. Drivers are typically provided by the production or vendor of the NIC. Since Linux is a start-up emerging operating system, the manufacturer of the NIC does not necessarily provide drivers in the Linux environment. At this point you have to do something else, such as going to a Web site dedicated to providing hardware drivers on the Internet, or posting a help message on a newsgroup. In short, only the driver of the network card can be taken to the next step.

There are two types of drivers for network adapters. One is the binary code that can be used directly, and the other is the source code of the driver. Binary code is typically a precompiled loadable module. The source code can be compiled into a loadable module, or it can be compiled into a part of the system core. How to compile the source code into a loadable module is not discussed in this article, you can refer to the driver's instructions.
