(1) about lynx
Lynx is a full-featured WWW browser on the Character interface. Lynx can run in many operating systems, such as VMS, UNIX, Windows 95, and Windows NT, including Linux. Because there is no beautiful graphic interface, lynx occupies a very small amount of resources and is fast. In addition, lynx is the only WWW browser that can run on character terminals.
Lynx home address is: http://lynx.browser.org, and http://www.cc.ukans.edu/lynx_help/Lynx_users_guide.html is Lynx user guide.
(2) Run lynx
You can run lynx in the form of lynx filename and lynx Protocol: // host/path/filename. The former is used to browse local files, and the latter is used to browse the Internet. Protocol, which can be HTTP, Gopher, FTP, and WAIS. For example:
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
Gopher
Gopher: // gopher.micro.umn.edu/11/
FTP (file transfer protocol)
Ftp://ftp2.cc.ukans.edu/pub/lynx/README
WAIS (Wide Area Information Service Protocol)
WAIS: // cnidr.org/directory-of-servers
If you run Lynx without any parameters, lynx first looks for an environment variable named www_home. If it is found, it connects to the URL specified by www_home. The www_home variable is set in bsh and KSh:
Export www_home = http://www.w3.org/default.html
Under CSH:
Setenv www_home http://www.w3.org/default.html
Lynx connects to its home page if the www_home variable is not specified: http://lynx.browser.org/
