Indeed, it is very difficult to give a rational definition of mathematics. Generally, the mathematics that the masses can directly understand is something they did two hundred years ago, as for the modern "Mathematics" that can be accessed in the standard mathematics department of the University, such as modern algebra, functional analysis, and algebra topology, it can be traced back to one hundred years ago, therefore, once asked about what modern mathematics actually contains, people who can clearly explain must have deep mathematical accomplishments. I am certainly not such a person. I remember when I was in the mathematics department, there were 31 students in the class, 100 points in the mathematics examination, and 20 points in additional questions. The vast majority of the students in the class were over 105, with a maximum score of 117 points, I only scored 97 points, which is under the average score. In those days, everyone was happy because the age was "learning mathematics and physics and traveling all over the world ". However, the unique nature of professional mathematics quickly breaks down the dream of most people. After half a semester, the dream of the math family is basically gone ,....... My class teacher studied algebra, and the selected teaching materials were the advanced algebra of the predecessors of Beijing Normal University, Mr. Zhang He-Rui and Mr. Hao Bing-xin. At that time, we were very anxious about mathematics. However, soon, we found that the taste of college mathematics was really unacceptable and rather unacceptable! In the past two months, most of us have no idea what to do with advanced algebra and what to do with mathematical analysis. This is even more of a problem. What real number constructor theory, ε-N language, ......, A series of dry and pure mathematics, a series of mathematics far away from reality, a series of mathematics with more than a hundred years of history, let us taste a bitter taste that has never been tasted, is this a bitter drink? For many students, there is a feeling of being fooled or going astray. Senior Brothers and Sisters said, "Where are you? Now you will know that this is just the beginning. When you have tasted 'functions' and real-time functions, you will know the taste of the mathematics department, it's hard to understand what it means after one semester of hard work "! Objectively speaking, the survival rate of the mathematics department is very low. I am lucky to be one of the few who can understand what I have learned. Today, 20 years later, I think about the past. It's really a great luck to choose the mathematics department. Maybe it's not. I can't tell you how to open the hard‑packed mathematical classics in the dark, I always feel a pity. Sometimes I really want to go back to the field that once had a dream, but time cannot go back.
How far is mathematics from reality? I am not qualified to answer this question. However, I can tell you seriously that mathematics and software development are very different from each other. Without ten years of preparation, you can hardly make a decent job in modern mathematics, this fact cannot be avoided even if it is a child prodigy. Software is not the case. If you choose to work in the software field, you can choose the appropriate starting point. 2-3 years can be a mature job, but not in the mathematics field. Those classic courses, as mentioned above, mathematical analysis, functional analysis, and modern algebra are insurmountable. Software code can be copied. Even if you don't understand it, mathematical research is almost incomparable in this aspect.
