Without Third-party tool software, you can implement file Protection in Word and Excel as well.
Password settings in a Word 2003 document
In Microsoft Office Word 2003, when we finish editing our own documents, we can click Tools on the menu bar to open options.

With the Security tab open, you can see the encryption option, where "password when opening" can restrict open documents and no reading rights; Password when modifying a file "is allowed to view, but no modification is allowed. If you do not want content reviewers to inadvertently modify the file, select the recommend open document as read-only check box. Enter the password after the click OK.
