On June 23, March 8, Microsoft said on Tuesday that Internet telephone (VoIP) will bring "billions" of dollars in revenue to enterprises.
According to Reuters, Jeff Raikes, president of Microsoft's Enterprise Department, said Internet calls will become popular in the next three years, and Microsoft's new server software will change the entire communication system industry, just as its Windows operating system changed the computer industry.
Before giving a keynote speech at the VoiceCon Spring 2007 Internet telephone industry conference, Raikes said in an interview: "You will see that history will repeat ."
Microsoft's strategy to switch to the Internet phone market is different from that of Cisco. Cisco sells a complete network system that integrates its own software and equipment, microsoft's goal is to build a business model that is the same as the PC market and centered on its software.
According to Rex, with the popularity of Internet phones, the corresponding software will grow into a market of 35 billion to 40 billion US dollars, and Microsoft will also get a share of it.
At present, the deployment cost is too high, which hinders many companies from completely switching to use VoIP systems. However, he believes that the cost of Internet telephone systems will be halved in the next three years.
Microsoft hopes that its Office enterprise software will become the center of the next-generation Unified Communication System and promote the simplification of enterprise employee communication.
The Office package includes Outlook emails, Word documents, and Excel workbooks. It is one of the most widely used software in the world. Microsoft's latest version of Office 2007 integrates the Status display function. Employees can call or send information to check whether the recipient is online.
Microsoft expects that more than 0.1 billion of enterprise users will be in three years-twice the size of current VoIP enterprise users-can call the Internet through Office.
Microsoft plans to launch a public test of its unified Communications software office Communications later this month.
