After creating a virtual machine under VMware according to the conventional method, the following dialog box will appear, because VMWare has not set the NetBSD option in the guest operating system, but we can still use it for installation. Select the other item.

After selecting next, the following dialog box is displayed. Set Virtual Machine name to NetBSD and set the installation path of the operating system. For the path selection, select this solution, you can try to partition your hard disk to store the NetBSD operating system and related resources. This will never damage any other data in case of misoperations. However, this is not absolute. The solution I chose is to assign a hard disk partition to this operating system.

When installing the NetBSD operating system, there are many ways to choose from, you can install through the network, you can also install through the CD-ROM, considering the installation process of security and many other factors, we recommend using the official ISO file for installation. This is a compressed file. You can download it from the official site of NetBSD, you can also download the image from the only image site in China (the image site is located in the network center of our school ). Our school network center provides the following image service address: ftp://iso.cn.netbsd.org.

Considering the operating efficiency of the operating system, try to avoid devices that are not commonly used when you use the operating system. For example, if you use NetBSD for research or server system software, I think there is no need to use a floppy disk drive. Of course, if you choose a floppy disk driver to install the operating system, you may need to keep it. In the CD-ROM settings we select the ISO file:

After opening the virtual machine, you will find the main menu of the installer. The upper part of the Virtual Machine displays the current operating system version information and menu User Guide. The middle part displays the current settings. The lower part displays the menu options. Select> A: Install NetBSD to hard disk to install the system. (We will introduce other options later)

Next, the following information will appear. Now you have chosen to install the NetBSD operating system on your hard disk. This will obviously change the information on your hard disk. If you choose not to use a dedicated partition to install the operating system at the beginning, you need to make a full backup of the data on your disk. Select "continue:

The following is the confirmation of BIOS geometric data. If you install NetBSD on a virtual machine, you do not have to consider the error in this geometric data. Of course, if you want to seriously study this operating system, it can be calculated based on the relevant formula.

The following describes how to select the partition usage type. There are two options:

(1) Use this disk for installation. This is recommended.
(2) using the entire disk for installation, we do not advocate this method, as stated in the prompt: This method will overwrite all installed systems, if you want to install another system next time, you must overwrite the currently installed NetBSD operating system, and then select "install some disks" to solve this problem. This is clearly not what we want. Of course, we use virtual machines here, and these problems do not seem to exist. We recommend the first method for you to avoid using virtual machines to install NetBSD in the future.

Sectors has the maximum elasticity and accuracy. Megabytes is easier to use, but considering its accuracy is the worst among the three, we still choose the C: sctors option.

The partition table settings are as follows: the currently used partition is highlighted.

After confirmation, edit the settings: Select NetBSD from the set type.

Among them, C: Set active is required.

The following describes the selection of BSD disklabel partition. We select the standard item based on space and other factors.

The next step is to confirm the partition settings. If yes, select item B.
