NVMe Flash Storage System Design challenges

as flash capacity continues to rise, prices continue to fall, and applications are increasing, pushing flash storage systems to replace traditional disk systems. Compared to traditional disk systems, storage-system design considerations are subject to significant changes due to changes in storage media. This change is directly reflected in the change of storage system software architecture, that is, the so-called storage software stack reconfiguration. For Sata/sas SSDs , the performance of the disk itself is limited by interface technology. Performance has been greatly improved compared to disk, but this amount of quantitative changes is not a fatal blow to traditional software stacks. For NVMe SSDs , flash performance is no longer limited to hardware and software interfaces, and performance can be fully released, with more than ten times the performance gain compared to Sata/sas SSDs . This huge quantitative change has led to a qualitative change in the design of the storage system. In such a system,the bottleneck of IO is transferred, many problems in disk system no longer exist,the new problem of NVMe SSD is put in front. How to make full use of the performance and efficiency of SSD by means of software? How to solve the IO bottleneck problem? How do you deal with new issues with flash storage itself? How to break the bottleneck problem of traditional export interface? How can traditional storage functions be implemented in flash storage systems and compatible with existing systems? These are the issues that need to be considered in the design process of the flash storage System, as well as the challenges encountered in the system design process.
