At the recent Oracle OpenWorld 2009 Conference, Oracle released the latest server virtualization product Oracle VM 2.2, they also said that their users will be able to use this product to accelerate deployment and simplify the management of enterprise applications.

Wim Coekaerts, vice president of Linux and virtualization products of Oracle, said: "The release of Oracle VM 2.2 allows users to better manage virtual environments by using the latest upgrades of server virtualization technology, reduce data center costs and energy consumption. In addition, this release provides the first-stage migration path for existing Virtual Iron users to Oracle VM, further improving the Oracle virtualization road map ."

Oracle VM 2.2 is the first step to introduce Virtual Iron management tools and feature sets. According to the plan, Oracle will provide Oracle VM 3.0 for the second half of next year. It is expected that this release will integrate all functional features of Virtual Iron server virtualization products. To prevent existing Virtual Iron users from waiting too long, Oracle released this Oracle VM 2.2 in due time to help these users. Oracle VM 2.2 will help these users migrate Virtual Iron Virtual machines to Oracle VMS more easily.

This release of Oracle VM 2.2 is based on the open-source Xen 3.4 hyperivsor and uses Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 as the system's dom0. Therefore, Oracle VM 2.2 improves performance for users running Intel Xeon 5500 Series processors or six-core AMD haolong processors.

In addition, Oracle VM 2.2 provides a wider range of hardware support, improving the scalability and security of hardware virtualization and parallel customer operating systems on 32-bit or 64-bit x64 processors. Oracle supports Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and 5; RHEL3, 4, and 5; Windows Server 2008 SP1, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2000.

Oracle's latest hypervisor supports 1 TB of primary memory and 64 logical CPUs. A virtual machine can be expanded to 32 cores and 63 GB of virtual memory on a 32-bit server. It can be expanded to support GB of virtual memory on a 64-bit server. It supports 128 virtual disk devices in each virtual machine pool. It uses 31 virtual network interfaces and 8 virtual network interfaces for the hardware virtualization customer's operating system for parallel operation.
