This issue of the foreign quality Translation course will be with you to learn how to use the Photoshop cc oil painting filter to transform the photo into an oil painting effect. In fact, the oil filter first appeared in the official filter of PS CS6, but in the end, it disappeared in the original version of Photoshop CC for a variety of reasons, but fortunately, the filter appeared in the 2015 Creative Cloud Update. Although this oil painting filter is no different from the CS6 period, the return is always good, and the CC version of the oil painting filter has a much smaller and finer operating interface, making it easier to get started.

Photoshop cc's oil painting filter lets you turn a picture into an oil painting, although the effect of the oil painting is different than the real one, but the effect of the converted oil painting is impressive, and it is a very interesting process and result. Before you start the following PS tutorial, it is recommended that you make a backup of the prepared photos first. Now let's take a look at the artwork we're going to work on and the final effect.

Turn the background into a smart object

Here are two ways to apply oil-painting filters. The first is the direct application, such operations will be the image of the picture for permanent changes, once we turn off PS and then open the image, you can not retrieve the original. The second is through Intelligent object application, first the action object into a smart object, and then in the Smart object filter operation, such operations are non-destructive, that is, can return to the original state at any time, this can easily try a variety of parameters and settings to achieve the best choice. So let's go back to the graph level, and we'll see the background layer as shown in the figure below.

Figure 02

The first is to convert the background to a smart object, in the Layers panel, click the button shown in the following figure.

Figure 03

From the pop-up menu, select Convert to Smart object.

Figure 04

After the click is complete, the image will not make any changes for the time being. However, in the layer thumbnails of the layers panel, you can see the addition of small labels as shown in the following illustration, which identifies the layer as a smart object.

Figure 05

Second, choose oil Painting Filter

After you have converted the background to a smart object, select the oil painting filter work below. Select Filter > Oil Painting in the main menu bar.

Figure 06

This opens the Oil Paint Filter dialog box. In the PS image processing software CS6, the dialog box occupies the entire screen, but now in the PS image processing software cc version, it is very small, very consistent with the rest of the interface. On top, we have a preview window, and here are a variety of options for controlling the oil painting effect, all of which we will be in a moment:

Click to select the oil painting filter to open the Oil Painting Filter dialog box. In the CS6 version, the dialog box fills up the entire screen, and in the CC version, the dialog box is small and seamlessly connects to the other windows. At the top of the dialog box, you can see a preview window, with various setting options, from the preview window to the adjustment effect of the parameter.

Figure 07

Although PS image processing software provides us with a real-time preview of the oil painting effect of the image itself these days, most of the pictures are too large to fit perfectly on the actual size of the screen. This forces us to look at them at less than 100% times the level, which means we don't see all the pixel images, which means we don't see a really accurate image of the image's appearance.

1. Preview window

Although Photoshop provides a live preview window, because of the larger pixel size of the photos in general operation, the appropriate zoom will be scaled to fit the screen so that we cannot see the 100% size of the photo pixel, so that the filter parameter settings are not accurately judged to be the desired effect.

However, PS provides a solution to the above problem by providing a 100%-size preview of the local critical check image in the preview window. Although the scope of the 100% preview is valid, by moving the 100% preview range, we can easily check the entire image location.

Move the mouse to the image you want 100% preview, the mouse will become a small fangzheng shape, it is the scope of the representative preview. Click on the yellow flower as the selection area to see the 100% Zoom Preview in the dialog box below.

Figure 08

Figure 09

At the bottom of the preview window, you can see the zoom scale now, with the default setting of 100%. You can adjust the appropriate scaling ratio by adding and reducing. However, 100% scaling is generally the most common scaling ratio.

Figure 10

The preview window also provides options for synchronizing the action effects on the canvas, as shown in the preview below. If you remove the preview check, it will display the original image directly on the canvas. The Preview small window in the Oil Filter dialog box shows a local filter effect, so that you can quickly compare the effects of the oil filter before and after the application. The shortcut key for the preview option is p.

2. Brush options

Now we know how to choose the appropriate preview effect. So let's look at how to set the painting brush. You can first see that the brush has four set options: stroke style, stroke cleanliness, zoom, hard brush details, and adjust these four options to achieve the desired oil painting effect. Under the brush option is the lighting options, you can set the angle direction, shiny, so as to control the canvas's overall light and the overall effect of the image contrast.

When you start setting brush options, you need to check that the lighting options are open. Because the lighting option mainly adjusts the contrast of the oil painting effect, if you do not have the lighting option turned on, you cannot quickly discern the effect of adjusting the brush options, so you open the lighting options first. In the lighting options, the main angle and shiny two parameters, you need to set is shiny, generally set to 2.0 is enough. Here just need to enhance the contrast, the specific way to look at a slightly later tutorial.

Figure 12

(1) Stroke style

The first setting of the brush option is the stroke style, and setting the value from low to high is wrinkled to smooth, pulling the adjustment block directly, and the minimum can be adjusted to 1.0.

Figure 13

Stroke styles give the picture the effect of an oil painting stroke, which can be coarse or smooth. As shown in the following figure.

Figure 14

Move the adjustment block to the far right, and you can see the brush stroke smoothing, where the maximum setting value is 10.0.

Figure 15

You can set a very fluent brush stroke by using a stroke style.

Figure 16

Here we recommend the set value is 4.0, if you have a better idea, you can set the meaning of their own, and so on after the other options are set, then adjust. Because the effect is the whole.

Figure 17

A good smoothness and detail effect can be found by selecting the appropriate parameter values.

Figure 18

(2) Stroke Cleaning degree

The second setting option is stroke cleanliness, which controls the edge effect of the brush, and the low setting values for more textures and details, while the high setting values can be cleaner. is often set to 0.0 during use.

Figure 19

The following figure is an effect chart with a stroke cleanliness setting of 0.0.

Figure 20

If you pull the slider to the far right, it is set to the maximum value of 10.0.

Figure 21

The effect of setting the stroke cleanliness to the maximum is a smooth stroke effect, but the corresponding detail effect will be less.

Figure 22

For our tutorial in the operation of the image, a higher stroke cleanliness will achieve better results, but not too high, because you need to keep some details, so the final can be set to 7.0. If you have a better choice, experiment with it!

Figure 23

The following figure is the effect of setting the stroke cleanliness to 7.0, and it should be noted that the stroke cleanliness is just one of the options that control the brush's effect, controlling the length of the brush stroke. The brush effect has other option settings, all of the settings control the overall effect, so do not have to dwell on the setting value is not a certain 7.0 problem.

Figure 24

(3) Scaling

Now we know that stroke styles control stroke smoothness, stroke cleanliness control stroke length, and now the third setting is the size of the control brush. Small scale is a small lighter brush, large scale is a large thickness of the brush. This sets the zoom ratio to column 0.1.

Figure 25

A lower zoom ratio makes the screen look lighter. It should be noted that the lighter is the use of less oil paint, so we will see a relatively thin pigment effect.
