We have all experienced the subject of the backlight (light from the rear of the body), because our eyes can automatically adjust to adapt to the scene, so we can see the main body from the viewfinder. The problem is that our camera is not as experienced as the eyes, so we always encounter a picture of the subject being too dark. Although I think the fill light and the recovery slider with camera Raw can get better results, the shadow/highlight command works well, and here's the trick: Make the adjustment editable.

First step:

Open a picture of the subject in shadow (the subject can be a person, building, or any object under the backlight). In this case, the light comes from the window behind the main body, so he looks like a silhouette. Ideally, we'd like to brighten him up and lower the highlight so that the light from the window and the right wall darkens. To do this, first go to the Filter menu and choose to convert to a smart filter, as shown in the figure. So when you apply the adjustment, it's like adjusting the layer (which means that we can edit it later, or even completely remove the adjustment) when needed. Although the adjustments we're about to apply are not found under the Filter menu, Adobe makes it like a regular filter for some reason, so why not use it? Now go to the Image menu and choose Shadow/highlight from the Resize submenu.

If we choose shadow/highlight, it is likely that there is a problem with the shaded area, which is why it is set to turn on (brighten) the shadow area of the photo by default, as shown in Figure 35%. In previous versions of Photoshop, the default setting was 50%, but most users felt the setting was too high, so in CS5, Adobe lowered it to a more reasonable value. In this case, however, the subject is deeply buried in the shadow, and we have to open a little more shadow, but the problem is that the picture will be "milky" when it is opened to 50% or higher. To resolve this issue, open the Show more options check box.

This opens the expanded version of the dialog box, as shown in the figure. My rule is to open the shaded area I need and make the effect less false. First of all, I usually keep the number at about 35% (the final number depends on the specific photo, I add it to 75). After that, drag the shadow radius slider to the right between 65 and 80 to make the effect smoother (the number of radii determines how many pixels each adjustment affects, so you increase the number of pixels that affect the larger range). Tip: Save the new default settings if you find a set of settings that you like, click the Save As Default button in the lower-left corner of the dialog box, so that the dialog box opens later with these settings.

Now that the shadow is open (and it looks real), we can handle the high light. In most cases, we only need to deal with one of the shadows or the high light, without having to deal with both. Few of the photos taken by people have been made to adjust in both areas. So to reduce (darken) the high light on the window and on the right wall, we go to the High light section and drag the Quantity slider to the right, as shown in the picture. If you need to adjust these changes later, because in the first step we apply the modification as a smart filter, so you can go to the Layers panel, double-click directly on the text "shadow/highlight", and the Shadow/Highlight dialog box opens again with the settings we used previously. Modify as needed, and then click the OK button.
