In more than a year, I added the PMP exam three times, and both of them failed until the third time. How to deal with failures? This is a challenge that everyone will face. If we can use the correct attitude to deal with temporary failures, the final success will not be far away. I hope to share with you how I transformed from an exam loser to a qualified PMP. In this process of transformation, it is full of hardships and thorns, but the same is also full of pleasure and pleasure. Dear friend, if you have unfortunately not passed the examination for the first time or even for the second time, so you are as lucky as I am to have one or even two "pain and happiness" growth opportunities. Temporary failure is not terrible. What is terrible is the final failure! You can also make a temporary failure as a final success!
I. The original intention and background of the PMP exam
PMP is the world's most authoritative Project Management Certification Examination. Its authority is not only embodied in today's rigorous and scientific evaluation systems, but also in many others it is based on international standards for project management and the essence of general project management ideas. As a project Project Administrator, I majored in project management. Lingjia has been working hard on the first line of project management. In my first line of work, I deeply realized the importance of project management and the difficulties that often occur in project management. I started to think about the gap between project management practices in China and international project management practices? How should we narrow this gap? The result is that PMP must be learned and PMP certificate must be obtained! Isn't PMP the best practice of international project management? Only by obtaining this certification can you really know what the international project management practices are like. Where is it? Where is advanced? Where is authority? Then we can find out where our gap is? How can we improve it? In this context, I applied for the PMP training and examination.
Ii. test failure and success
When talking about preparations and the shujia test, too many friends have introduced their experiences. I will not go into details about the detailed learning methods. There are tens of millions of successful methods, but there are often several lessons for failure. It is worth mentioning for everyone to take the exam.
After the first lecture, the teacher organized a small model test, and my accuracy rate only reached 40%. I began to wonder if I was not suitable for the study and examination of shujia? Is it similar to a person who lacks coordination when learning to drive? After the failure of the PMP exam, I summed up the problem: I did not have a good understanding of the idea of the PMBOK guide. I cannot naturally use the idea of the PMBOK guide to think about the problem, it is a big taboo to answer questions simply by using the project management thinking inherent in your mind and experience. As mentioned above, PMP is based on a new idea of project management. If you have some experience in the project management staff, you must be faced with the struggle between traditional experience and new ideas. If you cannot get rid of the original way of thinking, you cannot pass the PMP exam.
After the first failure, I did not give up. I work harder to learn the PMBOK guide. I only need to have classes in the training institutions. Every time I listen carefully, and I actively participate in the interactive Q & A of the instructors, so that I can have a deeper understanding of the PMBOK guide. I learned the PMBOK guide twice, and made the notes very seriously. In the two model exams at the end of the course, the accuracy rate reached 85% or more. In this way, I added the second exam with confidence.
However, I failed again. It makes me sad. Why? Why? Not only do I not understand it myself, but even the training instructors do not think it should be appropriate. Fortunately, I quickly got rid of the failure shadow and made up my mind to take the test again! Maybe God has made me learn more solidly! In the face of reality, I have carefully summarized the lessons of failure. The most basic reason for this failure is that you think too much about the question or knowledge point. As I learned more deeply, I gradually gained a unique understanding of some knowledge points. My own understanding does not necessarily conform to the interpretation of PMI. Although project management is an art, different people can have different understandings, they must answer questions according to the general understanding given by PMI during the examination. Assume that the first failure is due to a too old idea (based on experience only), then the second failure is due to a too new idea (pursuing breakthroughs ). During the exam, do not question the question "best practices ". Otherwise, you may not answer the question correctly, but may waste a lot of time and energy, resulting in insufficient time to deal with other questions.
For the third preparation, I learned more seriously and prepared more fully. In addition to the courses offered by shujia training institutions, I paid more attention to the training of exam-taking skills and my understanding of the ideas in the PMBOK guide. I also used various methods to remember the input, output, and tool technologies in the PMBOK guide, and basic concepts. In my mind, I summed up the lessons learned from the previous two failures and made constant adjustments. Sometimes, it may even be helpful to think like this: God may worry that after I pass the test, I will stop continuing my study on project management; he may especially want to put me stupid boy, become a champion in the project management field. These setbacks and polishing may destroy all my old ways of thinking, and then create a new way of thinking for project management based on standard theory. With the support of these ideas, I finally passed the test with excellent scores in the third test!
The three tests, Study and Preparation lasted 16 months and experienced the pain points of failure and the joy of success. My following experiences may be of reference to PMP candidates in the future:
1. Select a training course for excellent teachers
During the pre-exam training, I met two good teachers, one of whom is an excellent teacher Deng Guolin, and the other is Mr. Wang XiaoJin, who enjoys a high reputation in PMP project management. They can be said to be my true enlightening teacher in the project management field. under their influence, I can correctly take PMP Study and Preparation for exams, continue to study and add the exam after the exam fails.
2. If you want to remember a piece of knowledge, there is no other way, just to repeat it over and over again.
Maybe you have been confused by remembering 42 processes, 75 achievements, and 129 tools. These must be remembered. You just keep repeating. The number of repeated times is enough. You can remember it!
3. pay full attention to questions Simulation
PMP examination requires both solid knowledge and skillful test skills. Through targeted simulated exercises, you can consolidate your knowledge and exercise your testing skills.
4. PMP preparation project
Many friends have taken PMP preparation as a project and have received very good results. Here I want to say: PMP preparation is a temporary project, but learning about PMBOK guidance and project management should be a long-term continuous task. The PMBOK guide only provides guidance on the project management knowledge system. It has a lot of cutting-edge and Exploratory Knowledge, and will be proven after you have passed PMP!
Iii. New journey of Project Management
Preparing for the PMP exam and learning the PMBOK guide is just a process of consolidating basic project management knowledge. After you pass the test, you may not be able to immediately improve your work. Just as after reading a book about many ingredients, you don't have to make delicious food right away. After a large number of ingredients, to make food, you also need to "processing technology ". Such a processing technique is what we often call "methodology ". It is complementary to knowledge, and the knowledge can play a role through the cutting of methodology. The methodology without knowledge can only be the cutting leg of Hua Quan. The famous British project management PRINCE2 standard is a structured methodology based on the basic knowledge of project management.
The process of preparing for the PMP exam and learning the PMBOK guide is worth reviewing. PMP certificates also have some meaning, maybe it will become a "stepping stone" for your job, maybe it will become a "weight" for you to discuss your annual salary with your boss, or perhaps it will become a sublimation of your individual qualifications. However, compared with the certificate itself, PMP users experience self-improvement and the pleasure it brings in this difficult learning process.
Preparing for and applying for the PMP exam is nothing more than the following four results: 1. I learned the project management knowledge and passed the PMP exam; 2. I learned the project management knowledge, unfortunately, they did not pass the test. 3. They did not learn or pass the test. 4. Although they did not learn the knowledge, they were lucky to have passed the test. The first result is what everyone expects most. Everyone wants to take the exam once. The other result, despite all the regrets, must have a perseverance and enthusiasm for project management. passing the test is a certain result. The third result may be "public learning" and "forced learning. The reason why you can be "charged and learned" indicates that your organization attaches great importance to the establishment and integrity of the project management system. In addition, it also indicates that you are the "mainstay" in the Organization ", however, your results are too difficult to organize. The fourth result is terrible. Why do you think it is "horrible "? The "lucky" is actually the greatest misfortune. The fourth result may push a person to the verge of "negligence fraud or beneficial fraud. A non-real PMP Certificate Holder will suffer huge losses in the future.
The qualifications and certifications of a person only indicate the past and you have worked hard for this purpose. The most important thing for us to take the PMP exam is to learn the essence of the PMBOK-based project management philosophy, consolidate the foundation of project management knowledge, and then spread the relevant knowledge of project management, contribute to improving the Organization's project management level and shorten the gap between our field and the international advanced level.
