Popularity experts are not considered to question Linux Defects

Some Linux experts have questioned a report published by mi2g, a British security vendor, that calls Linux the "most flawed" computing environment.
Mi2g said it analyzed 235000 successful attacks against "permanently online" computer systems from January 1, linux accounts for 65% of all recorded attacks, Linux accounts for about 25%, and OS X and BSD only account for less than 5% of successful attacks.

Virus threats ignored

But according to Bruce pience, the open-source sports player, and others, the analysis method in this report has problems. Pilence said it was ridiculous that they did not include viruses, even though their own reports also believed that the financial impact of viruses on Windows systems was far greater than that on Linux systems.

Perence further explained his point of view. He said that the number of Windows systems attacked by automatic viruses is far greater than that of those attacked by manual attacks. Linux is still safer, but their reports come to the wrong conclusion only because it does not calculate the virus of automatic attacks. Pilence said the report caused harm to everyone because the virus was not identified as a major problem.

Perence also pointed out that with the rise of Linux, it is no strange to have more and more negative reports and comments on such open-source operating systems. When it succeeds, the more slander it receives.

Cost of success

Linux-based servers are mainly used to run enterprise websites. Open-source Apache web server software has a market share of more than 64%. Although it can run on other operating systems, its best partner is still Linux.

The mi2g report is the latest challenge for Linux, which is still in its infancy. An open source code Risk Management report published in February August this year states that, although no defendant has been filed in court, Linux may have infringed 283 software patents. Since the SCO group sued IBM in May March 2003, the patent issue has aroused serious concern for Linux users.

Microsoft also refuted every major advantage of Linux Through the Get the Facts marketing campaign. Its Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer also recently published an open letter to the customer about Linux attacks.

Suspicious conclusion?

Luo Bo. Handler, chief analyst at Enderle Group, also found many problems in mi2g's report. He believes that the company's previous research has a methodological problem, and they are always trying to create a sensation, rather than revealing the truth.

Asked the question about the study, handler said that BSD and apple are the least common general systems, so they are much less likely to become targets of hacker attacks, who will try to attack a system that does not get its own purpose?

He also said that BSD is mainly used by many computer experts, so it is always deployed in a safer way. He said the conclusion was very simple, and the security of systems used by many users who do not have deep computer knowledge would be even worse. The conclusions drawn by Mi2g are only based on the platform itself and are suspicious because they do not take into account the skills and popularity of use.
