Rancher v1.2 New Release Highlights analysis

Rancher the latest version of Rancher v1.2 has been fully released, in addition to the latest version of Kubernetes, Docker and Docker compose the necessary support, the upgrade also includes the Rancher container management platform itself, the main functions of the promotion.

Rancher v1.2 fully supports the latest storage and network plug-in frameworks (described in more detail later) and provides a new simplified version of HA settings, a more flexible configuration of the Rancher haproxy load balancer, and a new Rancher CLI. We've also added SAML 2.0 support, resource scheduling, and many improvements for performance and scalability. Rancher v1.2 is a big upgrade, the new features are listed in release note, but there are some, we especially want to highlight for you.

fully supports the container network and storage plug-in framework

Last year, Docker introduced the Docker volume plug-in and Libnetwork, and Kubernetes chose the Container Network Interface (MLM) and Flexvolume framework. Since then, we've seen the explosion of container ecosystems, all of which allow users to take advantage of today's storage and networking solutions.

One of the highlights of rancher is that it allows users to choose which tool to use in different infrastructures. With the release of v1.2, rancher fully supports the network of distributors, and in cross-host networks, users can use any vendor's MLM network Plug-in, as well as our own rewritten IPSec and Vxlan solutions. Users can also create volumes using any Docker volume plug-in for containers, stacks, or environments. Rancher v1.2 comes with a plugin that we support for NFS (which replaces CONVOYNFS), AWS EFS, and AWS EBS rewriting.

Modular, push-button, Container-ready environment

In addition to providing distribution and lifecycle management capabilities for storage and network plug-ins, we have introduced the concept of custom environment templates in rancher v1.2. Network and storage plug-ins can now be combined as options in customizable templates, including options for orchestration engines, external DNS, and health checks. This allows users to better organize and manage services and provide direct, consistent, and repeatable deployment of infrastructure services. In the future, we want to extend the scope of the environment template to include additional infrastructure services such as logging, monitoring, and databases.

Faster, more frequent release of new releases

When rancher launched the v1.0 version earlier this year, our goal was to provide a stable version every quarter, providing a pre-release snapshot every two weeks for the rancher open source community who wanted to experience the latest features. However, the key components in Docker and Kubernetes adhere to different release plans, and our open source community needs more frequent and stable releases. So we decided to start with v1.3 and we will release the stable version of rancher monthly.

This means that we will no longer publish the prerelease version as before, but the candidate releases will still provide download and testing. We hope that this new release plan will increase the flexibility of releasing new features, keep pace with the updates of Docker and kubernetes, and shorten the time between stable versions for rancher users who want to quickly experience new features and bug fixes.
