Server maintenance and dialysis

As a member of network management, I have encountered many problems in my actual maintenance work, so I have encountered some experiences. Maintenance can be divided into hardware maintenance and software maintenance. At the same time, maintenance of the server requires a deep understanding of the hardware system, operating system, and application software system of the server.

Hardware maintenance

Hardware maintenance is equally important to software. Readers must have a clear understanding of the hardware system of the server and the entire network environment. However, it is simple and easy to say. hardware maintenance is nothing more than adding and detaching equipment, replacing equipment, dust removal, fire prevention, and moisture-proof equipment.

1. Increase the memory and hard disk capacity. We should all know that increasing the memory is even more common. When the number of applications installed on the server increases, network resources increase, and network applications are diversified, all servers must be expanded to meet the evolving needs. There is a problem in this process: first, when adding memory, you should select the same manufacturer and model as the original memory! The author has encountered that a root DDR is added because there is no dedicated ECC memory at hand. As a result, the system cannot be restarted due to an error!

2. it is not a big problem to remove servers. The key is to pay attention to the fact that many server chassis are hidden in xuanjicang, so you must read the instructions carefully before starting; needless to say, there is a dust-proof problem. Many inexplicable faults are dust-caused disasters. Generally, machines should be cleaned regularly every month.

Here, I have to repeat it all the time. servers generally provide disk arrays. I can see that many server rooms have only one hard disk! In this way, there is no guarantee of data redundancy, and there is no security guarantee and performance optimization for storage. There is another problem. Many administrators only think that some components are the most important, so they do their best to invest in maintenance, while other components ignore their optimization work, this makes the functions and performance of these components not very good, which is also a waste of resources! Everyone should pay attention to it!

Software maintenance

Software System maintenance is also the largest part of server maintenance, generally including the maintenance of the operating system, network services, database services, user data, and other aspects.

1. Operating System Maintenance
The operating system is the basis of software running on servers. Its importance is self-evident. Nowadays, most Server operating systems use Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server as the operating system, which is easy to maintain.
In Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server, the event viewer should be opened frequently to check whether there are any records of special exceptions in system logs, security logs, and application logs. In addition, we all know that the operating system has vulnerabilities. Therefore, we need to download the latest Service Pack (upgrade Service package) on Microsoft's website to install it, so as to promptly fix the security vulnerabilities.

2. Maintenance of Network Services
There are many network services, such as the WWW Service, DNS service, DHCP service, SMTP service, and FTP service. As more and more services are provided by servers, the system is prone to confusion and security will be reduced, in this case, you may need to reset the parameters of each service and enable the firewall to ensure secure and normal operation.

3. Database Service
A database is an important data source. after a certain period of operation and use, you need to adjust the database performance to bring it into the optimal state. There is also regular database backup, just in case.

4. User Data
Similarly, as time increases, a large amount of data may be stored in the server database. These data should be very valuable resources, so they need to be organized and saved permanently on a CD. Even if the server fails, the data can be quickly restored.

Summary:

Let's take a look at a piece of information, referring to the server maintenance statistics: "according to the statistics, 80% of servers in the industry have not been optimized, and 90% of servers do not regularly perform system performance monitoring, 95% of servers do not have comprehensive data redundancy security measures, and nearly half of servers do not adopt data backup solutions. These servers are actually in a sub-health status, embodied in: hardware redundancy is not used for power supplies, fans, hard disks, controllers, cables, NICS, CPUs, and other key components, resulting in reduced system security. Low-speed and compatible device components are used, unreasonable configuration of memory, CPU, hard disk controller and other causes performance degradation; no use of any network server management software and hardware, there are serious management defects ". From the above survey statistics, we can easily find that most servers are still exposed to many security risks! However, this cannot be solved. In fact, the server maintenance work is indeed quite complicated, and the key is how to find a proper maintenance method. This can only rely on continuous practice!
