Introduction

Data visualization is the most intuitive way of data analysis. Therefore, all BI systems have their own multi-graphic controls on the presentation layer to facilitate developers to display data graphically. For example, if you use a line chart to display the sales data that changes over time and a bar chart to show the sales volume of different departments in 2012, the above requirements share a common feature, that is, only one or two charts are needed for a report. In the report, we focus more on the fine-grained data carried by the chart itself (for example, for 2012, the sales volume of department 1 is 1000, department 2, with a sales volume of 1200, etc.), and few need to display multiple charts in one report or compare different charts.

However, sometimes we have another report requirement. In this report, we need to display a lot of images, so we do not pay attention to the detailed data on each graph, instead, focus on the overall data carried by the image and compare the data in a wide range of images. At this time, the common chart control is not suitable for the demand, so sparkline and databar are introduced ).

For example, the following figure shows a sparkline image on the left and a databar image on the right:

1. The spark graph on the left shows the overall sales volume in each sales area and the trend of sales volume over time. For this image, we do not care about the detailed sales volume in each sales area at each time point. We only care about the overall trend and compare the sales trends in different sales areas.

2. The data bar on the right shows the sales volume in each sales area, which makes it easy for us to realize the sales volume gap in each area.

Sparkline and data bar

Spark graphs and data bars are small and simple graphs that carry a large amount of information but only occupy a small amount of space. They are generally embedded in text, or placed in a table or matrix cell. Their strength lies in viewing and comparing many images together, rather than viewing a single image, so that we can easily see the outlier.

Although the image is small, each sparkline will display a lot of data points that generally change over time, note that sparkline displays aggregated data, so it cannot be placed in the detaigroup cell. databar can also represent multiple data points, but generally we only display one data point, unlike sparkline, it can be displayed in the detailgroup cell.
