I admire Apple's CEO Steve Jobs, a dreamer. This is Steve Jobs's speech at the Stanford University graduation ceremony.
There is a reason for everything.
-- When we occasionally stop looking back on our journey, we may be surprised by the elaborate design of fate, so we feel that these experiences have affected my life. Find your favorite. Treat every day as the end of life
If you are hungry for knowledge, if you are foolish-stay hungry, Stay foolish.
Body:
I am honored to attend the graduation ceremony with you today. Stanford is one of the best universities in the world, and I have not yet graduated from the university. To be honest, this may be the day before my college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories in my life.
Social networking
I dropped out of school after six months at Reed University, but then I finally left after 18 months of study. The story begins before I was born. My mother was a young unmarried mother. She was still a graduate student when I was born, so she decided to send me to another person for adoption. She insisted that I should have been adopted by a couple who have been in college, so when I was born, she was prepared to be adopted by a lawyer and his wife. But at the last moment, the couple changed their mind to adopt a boy. At this time, another couple on the list, my adoptive parents, decided to adopt me. But afterwards, my mother-in-law discovered that her adoptive mother had not graduated from college, and her adoptive father did not even graduate from high school. So she refused to sign the final adoption document until a few months later, my adoptive parents promised to send me to college, and her attitude changed.
At the age of 17, I stupidly chose a school nearly as expensive as Stanford University. My parents are blue-collar and almost all their savings are spent on my tuition. Six months later, I decided to drop out of school because I had no idea what it would be for me to do so. At that time, I was actually very scared when I made this decision. Now I will go back and look at it. This is one of the most correct decisions I made in my life. From the moment I drop out of school, I no longer have to go to the required courses that I'm not interested in and start to listen to interesting subjects.
But it's not that romantic. Because I have no dormitory, I can only sleep on the floor of my friend's room. I picked up a 5 cent cola bottle to fill my stomach. On Sunday evening, I need to walk 7 miles through the city, just to eat meals-the only good meal this week. But I like it. I followed my intuition and curiosity and met many things, which proved to be invaluable afterwards.
Because I have dropped out of school and don't have to go to those regular courses, I chose a calligraphy class and want to learn how to write beautiful words. In this class, I learned a variety of lined and unlined fonts, how to change the spacing of different font combinations, and how to make beautiful la S. It is a subtle thing that science can never capture, full of beauty, history, and art. This is so interesting.
At that time, I did not expect the practical application of this knowledge in my life. However, 10 years later, when we designed the first Macintosh computer, it came in handy. I designed all the things I learned into Mac. It was the first computer to use beautiful printed fonts. If I did not drop out of school at the time, I would not have the opportunity to attend this art class I was interested in. Mac would not have so many rich fonts, as well as pleasing font spacing. Now my PC won't have these wonderful fonts. When I looked back at all these social connections in 10 years, I felt that my life was amazing.
Of course, it is impossible for a person to link up the pieces of his life with foresight. Only when you look back can you discover the connections between these dots and dots. Therefore, you must firmly believe that what you are experiencing will be linked up in your future life. You must believe in something: your intuition, destiny, courage, karma ...... It is these beliefs that make me not lose hope, but also make my life different.
Don't stop in front of setbacks
I was lucky to know what I love to do when I was young. At the age of 20, I started an Apple computer company in my parents' garage with Steve Wozniak. We work very diligently. In just 10 years, a company consisting of two workers expanded into a "giant thing" with 4000 employees, with a value of $2 billion. In 9th, the company launched our best product, the Macintosh computer. At that time, I was just beginning to stand out.
Then I got fired.
How can a person be fired by a company he founded? As Apple grew, we hired a talented person to manage the company with me. In the first year, we had a tacit understanding. But later, we had a disagreement on the future prospects of the company, so there was a conflict between them. The company's board of directors stood on his side, so at the age of 30, I was kicked out.
In the first few months, I really don't know what to do. I became the loser and frustrated people who started my business together. I even wanted to escape from Silicon Valley. But as dawn gradually emerged, I found that I still liked the things I had done. Although abandoned, we do not want to change our enthusiasm. So I decided to start again! Although I didn't see it at the time, it turns out that being fired by an apple is the best thing I 've ever experienced in my life. Because the joy of a successful person is replaced by the ease of an entrepreneur, and I am not so important to anything. This makes me feel very free. My life has entered the most creative stage.
In the next five years, I started next and Pixar, and met Lawrence, who later became my wife. Pixar made the world's first fully digital movie, "Toy Story 2". Now this company is one of the world's most successful animation production companies. Later, after a series of events, Apple bought next, so I went back to Apple. The technology we developed at next became one of the core drivers driving Apple's renaissance. Lawrence and I have a wonderful family life.
I am very sure that it will not happen to me if I have not been fired by Apple. Sometimes life is like a block of bricks to your head, but do not lose confidence. I love my work, and it is the only reason I have always supported me to keep moving forward. You have to find out your favorites, work, and love. If you haven't found such a job, continue looking for it. A great job will only become more refined during the years of preparation. So, before you get something, don't stop looking for it. Don't stop!
Treat every day as the end of life
When I was 17 years old, I read a motto about: "If you treat every day as the last day of your life, you will find that everything is under control one day." This sentence has had a profound impact on me since I read it. In the past 33 years, I have asked myself in the mirror every morning: "If today is the last day of my life, would I still want to do what I should have done today ?" When the answer is No for many days, I know the time has come to make changes.
All things will disappear in the face of death, leaving only truly important things. In all the methods I know, reminding myself that I am about to die is also the best way to avoid falling into the trap of "fear and loss. In addition, this method allows you to face yourself directly. There is no reason not to listen to your call.
I was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. At Am I had a check and the scan results clearly showed that a tumor had occurred in my pancreas. I didn't even know what the pancreas was. The doctor told me that it is almost certain that it is an incurable disease, and at most three to six months can survive. The doctor suggested that I go home and arrange everything properly. This is a standard term for the doctor to treat the dying patient. This means that I have to spend a few months talking to my children over the next 10 years. This also means that it is time to say goodbye to everyone.
I live with that diagnosis all day. Until one morning, the doctor gave me a slice examination. I used a stash, and my wife was with me. As a result, when they observed the cell tissue under the microscope, they were surprised to scream. This is a rare type of pancreatic cancer that can be operated.
This is my closest death. After having passed this experience with death, death is just an effective tool for me to judge, it is just a pure rational concept. Although I can tell you with certainty that no one wants to die, even if they want to go to heaven, they want to live in.
You are still new generation, but in the near future, you will gradually grow old and be given a stage of life. Sorry, it's so dramatic, but that's what life is. You have limited time, so do not waste time repeating others' lives. Do not let the noise from others' opinions overwhelm your inner voice. The most important thing is to have the courage to follow your own heart and intuition. They may already know what kind of person you actually want to be. Other things are secondary.
When I was young, there was a great magazine named global directory. The magazine was founded by a guy named Stuart brandd. He made it poetic, but unfortunately it was not long. That was in the middle of 1970s, and I was at your current age. At the bottom of the last issue of the magazine, there was a photo of the Country Road in the early morning, very pleasing to the eye. If you like adventure trips, you will often encounter such paths. There is a line below the picture: "If you are hungry, then you are foolish ." This is their farewell message. I am always self-reflective. Now, when you graduate and start a new life, I will give this sentence to you.
If you are hungry for knowledge, then you are foolish with an empty mind.
Thank you very much.
