TurboLinux is a Linux Release Developed by pacpacific HiTech. It is now released by Beijing Trina Solar software Co., Ltd. to Release the official TurboLinux Simplified Chinese version. The version is 3.0.2 Pre Release 1 FTP, you can download this release at ftp://turbolinux.com.cn/pub/turbolinux. this document uses turbolinux 3.0.2 as an example to describe how to install Linux.
Preparations before installation
Computer system preparation: TurboLinux claims that it can run on a relatively low-end computer. However, after installation and use, it is found that it is necessary to prepare a high-speed, large hard disk, and multi-memory computer. Linux requires a better hardware system than Win98. If your computer is configured with 32 MB memory, PC133, and 2 GB hard disk, TurboLinux can achieve satisfactory results.
Hard Disk preparation: although it is dangerous to install TurboLinux in another partition on a hard disk with a DOS boot partition, because the data in the DOS boot partition may be damaged during the installation process, it is recommended to prepare a hard disk that can be used as needed before TurboLinux is installed, the hard disk must be larger than 200 MB ). If there is only one hard disk, you must think of a way to back up important data on your hard disk.
Of course, you can also create a multi-boot system containing Linux, but the process is complex and cumbersome, because the installation of TurboLinux must use its own unique partition, to install TurboLinux, for example, use the DOS or Linux FDISK software to repartition the hard disk (we recommend that you use the partition software that does not damage partition data, such as PQ to prepare Linux partitions ). Therefore, it is best to prepare an empty hard disk or a DOS partition with only common data files.
Hotkeys during installation: Some hotkeys can be used during TurboLinux installation. For more information, see the HTML file in the DOC directory of the Installation Guide on the installation CD ).
Start to select the Installation Method
CD Boot installation: it is recommended to Boot the Linux installation CD from the CD-ROM requires the motherboard BIOS to support system Boot from the CD-ROM and to Boot ).
DOS boot installation: You can enter the pure DOS Status and start it in the LoadLin mode on the TurboLinux installation disc. Go to the subdirectory/dosutils of the installation CD, and enter the command Autoboot to start installing TurboLinux. In addition, you can use the Linux boot and installation floppy disk to install the software. For details, refer to the installation instructions on the CD.
Select the first-stage installation device
Step 1: Start the installation program. If a prompt is displayed, press Enter to start installation. The Chinese TurboLinux installation is a series of wizard-like chinese menu interfaces. In many steps, you only need to press the Enter key ). But in general, it cannot be simple and easy, especially in the second half of the installation. What's more annoying is that if any errors occur during the setup process, it is very likely that you should start from scratch.
Step 2: select colors. Select whether to use a color monitor.
Step 3: Welcome to TurboLinux. Tip to view the HTML installation manual on the installation CD, and to view the Technical Support site http://www.pht.com/turbolinux/ (Chinese Version support site http; // www.turbolinux.com.cn ). Press enter.
Step 4: select the keyboard type. Dozens of keyboard types are listed here. Generally, select "us ". You can use the/usr/sbin/kbdconfig command to reset the keyboard type after installing TurboLinux.
Step 5: ask if the machine supports the PCMACIA card. Generally, the interface card is available in a laptop. For most desktops, select "no ".
Step 6: The installer starts to automatically detect the system's hardware device, that is, the TurboProbe detection program). During the detection, close the parallel port printer as required by the program.
TurboProbe is part of the TurboLinux installation program. TurboProbe automatically detects various interface card devices in the system. During the detection process, you can press "Alt + F4" to view the detection process. Press Alt + F1 to return to the main installation screen. After the detection, a list of all detected devices is displayed.
Step 7: The installer asks if you want to install TurboLinux from the initiator device of the parallel port, that is, whether to install TurboLinux from the external drive or hard disk. Select "no ".
Step 8: List of devices detected in the installer report.
Step 9: select the installation device. Select CD-ROM for most devices.
Step 10: Make sure the TurboLinux installation disc is inserted in the CD-ROM. Press enter.
The installation process in the first phase is the simplest. You can press enter all the way. But from below, you need to carefully read every description of the installation program and operate it with caution.
Phase 2: Create Linux partitions
Step 2: select the TurboLinux Installer Dialog Box and the confirmation method of the list. Select "normal ". Step by step. In this step and the following steps, you need to use the "TAB" key on the keyboard to move the cursor. You also need to use the arrow key instead of the mouse), use the space key to select, and finally use the Enter key to indicate the end.
Step 2: select the network type, you can select "LAN" LAN) or "PPP" dial-up Internet access), and then select "finish ".
Network settings can be performed after installation. You need to study the settings by yourself.
Step 2: Check whether a SCSI device exists. Select "no ".
Step 1): Perform Linux partitioning. To install TurboLinux, you must create a Linux Root partition on the hard disk. The size of the root partition is not limited. The installer will automatically create a swap partition for roughly virtual memory usage). Therefore, you must reserve about MB of unpartitioned hard disk space during partitioning. In this partitioning step, the installer lists several options. If you have completed Partitioning in advance, such as using PQ and creating a Linux partition using the self-contained partitioning tool on the TurboLinux cd ), you can select "done" or use the "FDISK" and "CFDISK" recommended in this step) to repartition. The following uses "CFDISK" for partitioning.
Step 1): Create a new primary partition named "/dev/hda1 "). The list of partitions on the hard disk is shown in figure 2. Use the up/down cursor key to move and select a partition, and then use the left/right cursor key to select an operation command at the bottom of the screen. Common Operations are "Delete" and "New ). You can delete unnecessary partitions. Then move the cursor to a Free Space in the empty Space), move the cursor to "New" at the bottom of the screen with the Left and Right cursor keys, and press Enter, select "Primary" to create a Linux Primary partition. Press enter. The "Sizein MB" character is displayed on the screen.): ××× "××× indicates the disk space, unit: MB ). In this case, enter the size of the primary partition to be created, and enter only numbers. The unit is MB. Press enter and select the "Begin" partition from the header of the free disk space). The primary partition of TurboLinux is created. We recommend that you set a larger value for the root partition of the primary partition, because if you want to install TurboLinux completely, the root partition requires more than 100 MB space, and the minimum installation is MB.
Step 2: Create a logical partition. The method is roughly the same as above. However, when selecting the partition type, select "Logical ". You can also create a logical partition instead of a primary partition.
Partitions created for Linux installation are special. You can have primary partitions, logical partitions, and swap partitions. In the primary partition, you must set a partition as the root partition/dev/hda1) to install the system. Swap partitions are also required. In TurboLinux, You can manually create settings, or you can set them automatically by the installer.
Step 2: Set swap partitions. Use the left and right cursor keys to select "Quit" and press enter to exit the interface shown in step 1. Select "finish". The installer starts to check partitions on the hard disk and automatically sets swap partitions. Then, format the swap partition. During formatting, you can check whether there are bad slice blocks in the hard disk partition ).
Step 2: select and format the root partition. After partition swap settings, the installer prompts you to select which partition is used as the root partition of the system if you have multiple Linux primary partitions) and whether to format the Linux primary partition. Use the Tab key to move the cursor to the partition to be formatted, press the Space key to select, move the cursor to confirm, and press enter to start formatting the hard disk partition.
We recommend that you format the root partition, even if the Linux Root partition has already been created.
Step 2: Set the TCP/IP protocol parameters for dial-up Internet access. Enter an IP address, for example, 10.10.10.1. Press enter to enter the network mask 225.0.0.0. The default gateway address, which can be automatically entered by the primary DNS server address program. Select "OK ".
Step 2: The program starts to query the node name and domain name. If the query fails, enter the domain name and node name. Enter the domain name. For example, in Linux, the node name is automatically entered as Linux. Enter the second server name IP address) and the third server name, such as Linux1 and Linux2. Select "OK" to continue.
Step 2: confirm the history file. The installer notifies the operator that the record file of the installation process will be stored in/tmp/turbopkglog in the root directory. If any problem occurs during installation, you can find a solution clue in the record file.
Phase 3 File Replication
Step 2: The program prompts you to start installing the software package. Select "OK". Eight system installation methods are listed on the installation screen. Specify the disk space required for installation. Move the cursor bar to the desired installation method with the up/down cursor key, select "Install" with the "Tab" key, and press Enter.
Generally, select "personal workstation". This installation method can install most of the software packages required for personal work, such as Word Processing and graphic editing tools. Of course, you can also choose to use full installation, but you must prepare a large enough partition.
Step 1: Set the boot partition. The installation screen lists the partitions on which the boot program for "LILO" Linux is created ). We recommend that you install it in the master boot area of the/dev/had hard disk. You can also create a boot or floppy disk in the root partition to boot Linux.
Step 2: Set the passing parameters, and pass parameters such as the memory size to the installer to set the Linux Startup parameters. Generally, this parameter is not set.
Step 2: Detect Video hardware, such as video cards. After the detection is completed, the detection results are listed. You can compare the detection results with the graphics card parameters you actually know to see if they are correct. In most cases, the video card can be correctly detected. If not, manually configure the video card in the next step. The installer lists more than two hundred graphics cards, most of which can be found.
Of course, the hardware driver support for Linux is still very poor, and many hardware, such as many of the existing AGP graphics cards, cannot be driven. Even worse, few hardware vendors provide drivers for Linux systems, so whether your computer can install Linux depends on your luck. However, you can go to the Internet to find http: // 202.103.112.32 /~ Gaoyu/search.html) to see if you can find the Linux driver you need.
Stage 4 install the X Window Server
Step 2: Setup starts configuring the input/output device. First, configure the keyboard. Generally, select the "us" keyboard layout. Click "Tab" and select "OK ". Press enter to next and select the keyboard layout. If the so-called Windows keyboard 104 key is used, select "Generic 104-key ". Finally, set the language layout on the keyboard to "American English ".
Step 2: configure the mouse. Select the mouse type to use in the mouse list. In most cases, select "Microsoft compatible with the mouse 2 key)" or "common PS2 mouse ". In the next window, set the serial interface used by the mouse and select "Serial Port 1 ". Finally, specify the number of buttons used by the mouse, and select 2 or 3 based on your mouse.
Step 2): select the monitor. Generally, select "default Monitor" unless you have an international brand-name monitor. Although you can also customize the monitor, if the settings are not correct, you may be faced with the trouble of starting to install again, the specific settings should be studied by yourself (please be careful when selecting settings, because an incorrect setting may cause damage to the display ).
Next, select the number of colors to display. If the video memory on the video card is small, it is best to set it to 8-bit color, otherwise the following will not get a high display resolution mode. Step 2 (important): select the display resolution mode. If the default display mode is selected, the installer automatically displays several possible resolution modes (this is related to the Display memory, number of colors, and display ). We recommend that you set it to 800 × 600 or above. Generally, the virtual display size is not set. The scan frequency can be set automatically. Finally, the 100DPI font is used for most monitors ).
Step 2: select the graphical login mode, and then the program prompts to check whether the settings of the X server are correct. The program starts an X Window Screen using the current configuration. If the display is correct, press the "Quit" button to return the program (you can also press "Ctrl + Alt + Backspace" to return the program ). Check whether the program is correct. Select "No" to reconfigure it. The program then saves the configuration parameter record, and the X Window server is configured.
Final work of Stage 5
Step 2: configure the time zone. Generally, select the default parameter.
Step 2: configure the printer. Generally, cancel the installation. You can configure the printer after installation.
Step 2: Detect plug-and-play devices, generally sound cards and other devices. You can also choose not to set installation after installation, the installation failure may cause more troubles ).
Step 2: select the number of colors for the window manager. You can select 16-bit color 16bpp ). If the video memory on the video card is not much, we recommend that you select 8-bit color. Step 2: Set the Super User Password, which enables you to enter Linux as a Super User (System Administrator) to fully manage the system. Next, you need to set a common user password for you to use Linux as a common user.
Note: When you enter the password, the screen will not display the characters that indicate the password, such as the "*" character ).
Step 2: After the installation is complete, the system restarts and enters the Linux window server system.
After the above steps of installation, if everything is normal, you can see the TurboLinux FANG Rong, I do not know if you are frustrated or excited? Unfinished work ......
Follow the steps above to install TurboLinux, just to ensure that you can see its veil, there are too many installation work to do, such as installing MODEN, printer, and configuring the network, set the display mode and font. Installation of other devices, such as scanners, TV cards, and external storage devices may fail. The following briefly describes how to install the sound card and set the font.
Install the sound card manually: Start the Linux system, enter the system administrator name "root", and then enter the password. Do not display the password again ). In the X Window, click the "TurboLinux" button in the button bar on the right of the Window. In the displayed button bar, select "Control Panel". In the displayed control panel window, select "System Tools" System settings). Eight configuration options are listed on the right of the page. Click the "TurboSoundCfg" option to start the driver settings of the sound card.
In Linux, the sound card setup program is started in Windows-like DOS window on the X terminal. Start with the introduction screen. Press enter and select the sound card type as required by the program. For many users, you can select "SoundBlaster 16" or use the mouse key to select the sound card type that you think is appropriate. Then, move the cursor to the MPU-401 MIDI Inter-face item with the Tab key, select with the Space key, and press Enter.
Set the IO port and interrupt IRQ in the following interface ). Generally, the I/O port can be set to 0x220, And the IRQ port can be set to 5 or 7. You can select other ports and press enter to confirm. In MPU-401 settings, you can set by default and press Enter. The program prompts that the driver setting parameters of the sound card will be saved, and press enter to confirm.
Finally, the program will play a sound sample for a minute) to check whether the sound card is set correctly. If you hear the sound card, it indicates that the sound card is correctly set. If you do not hear it, you can select "no" in the next screen. The program then goes back to the previous step and starts to reset the settings.
TurboLinux also provides automatic detection and installation of plug-and-play devices (such as sound cards). In the control panel, select "TurboPNPcfg" in "System Tool, program to start automatic detection of plug-and-play devices.
Set Font: the TrueType font is used in the X Window of TurboLinux. Currently, the free trial version of TurboLinux is popular in China. After installation, some characters may be abnormal and garbled. However, you can install other Chinese TrueType fonts in X Window. The installation font is simple. You only need to copy the Windows TrueType font file to the "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/tt" directory, note that TurboLinux predefines the font file name. For example, the font file name of is tlc_songttf. When copying a font file, you must change the file name to tlc_songttf. Other predefined file names include tlc_heittf () and tlc_kaittf (.
