Storage Learning-Simulate IP SAN in Windows Server via Starwind

I. Introduction of Starwind

Starwind with Starport ISCSI, this software allows you to output any local CD and DVD data to the network, you can virtual hard disk on the network, output the overall server storage subsystem and a lot of snapshot work.

1. Software Introduction

iSCSI Software.

Starwind is a hardware independent, suitable for Internet cafes, enterprise Virtual disk data management. The speed is very fast!

Cost-effective and scalable storage management solutions that gain the benefits of storage area networks, such as enhanced disaster recovery and increased tuning flexibility, without consuming additional resources on the program server. Starwind does not require additional hardware, it leverages existing Ethernet and IP network foundations and effectively leverages existing storage hardware.

Starwind Snapshot work allows simple bookings or snapshots that require critical data are not backed up. If required, all backup data can be retrieved and only the personal files needed will be recovered. Starwind's unique ability to virtualize and share physical hardware means that it is not necessary to have an expensive DLT tape or high capacity Blu-ray (Blu-ray) or Hd-dvd burner attached to each machine.

2. Main benefits

Storage consolidation: Consolidate all the storage on the server to increase the "rise time" of the program, and simplify management. The entire storage consortium can be centrally managed to remove the "islands" of the disks that need to be maintained separately. It can also completely move all the hard drives from the client machine (powered by the SAN) with iSCSI HBAs or software iSCSI boot resolution, significantly reducing network TCO and IT management spending.

Disaster recovery and Backup: Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Services) is compatible with dynamic volume snapshots and automatic incremental backups, without the need for manual backup activities at all.

Leveraging existing storage: The Starwind can leverage existing direct-attached storage (serial and parallel ATA and SCSI, Fibre Channel, USB, and FireWire) to make it available as iSCSI storage.

Create mirrored, automatic fail-resistant SAN volumes: The Starwind is perfect for repairing a RAID-1 (mirror) on different physical hard drives. There is no need for an expensive RAID controller or dedicated software RAID volume configuration.

Automatic replication: Replicate mission-critical data to another place with a low-bandwidth connection.

Shared physical devices: tape drives and ultra-modern high-capacity Blu-ray and Hd-dvd burners can be shared via a standard IP network, leveraging existing tape backup and Cd/dvd/blu-ray/hd-dvd burning programs to allow backup to a remote tape or optical media drive.

Tuning compliance: Reduce complex and simple data retention forces, backup and disaster recovery to meet tuning requirements such as Sarbanes-oxley and HIPAA.

Create a Media Library: a standard ISO image can be placed into a virtual iSCSI DVD-ROM drive to create a media library output through an IP SAN without having to deal with physical CD/DVDS.

Outstanding performance: Starwind iSCSI Target has a matching "Made in the company" iSCSI Initiator called Starport. This combination provides unmatched performance compared to the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator and third-party iSCSI targets.

3. Main Features

Starwind uses a cross-platform iSCSI protocol to service virtual storage. Currently Starwind can emulate hard drives and DVD-ROM drives. Future versions of Starwind will support VTL (Virtual tape library) emulation and Microsoft VDS (Virtual Disk Service) can make disk-to-disk-to-tape backup and storage management easier than today.

Automatic or manual Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Services) compatible with instantaneous, volume cloning and an incremental backup of countless "roll-back" points.

The automatic supply is fully supported by Starwind. There is no need to allocate data until required by the user.

I/O read-write cache. Starwind uses Target's RAM as a cache to improve throughoutput and response times.

Starwind tightly combines Microsoft Windows NTFS compression and encryption capabilities. Starwind san image files stored in NTFS formatted partitions can be encrypted (disk images are copied to removable media will be encrypted) and compressed (without excessive additional access).

The Starwind combines its own iSCSI-based replication engine. Replicate mission critical data to another place with a low-bandwidth iSCSI WAN connection.

Run Starwind control multiple servers from a single management console (Windows or Web interface). Future versions of Starwind will implement this interface as an MMC (Microsoft Management Console).

The Starwind is capable of using both serial and parallel ATA and SCSI, Fibre Channel, USB and firewall storage hardware. Output an entire disk or a separate file or partition on the hard disk as an iSCSI virtual disk.

Storage hardware (tape drives, automatic tape libraries, high performance Blu-ray and Hd-dvd burners, DVD-ROM converters, etc.). ) can be "networked" using Starwind.

Starwind fully supports booting iSCSI from SAN. This allows you to completely no longer need to install the hard drive on the client machine.

Software RAID-1 (mirroring). With Starwind, you do not need to put an output iSCSI disk volume on a hardware RAID control disk, and you do not need to create a software RAID volume with the operating system facilities.

Starwind uses random memory installed on the server. It reads and writes the requirements for virtual iSCSI disks.

Create an ultra-high-speed iSCSI RAM disk drive for temporary data storage and network stacking adjustments.

There is no limit to the individual disk capacity, the total number of hard disk installs, the number of CPUs or CPU cores, the number of Ethernet ports or RAM.

Support IPV4 and IPV6.

Secure IPSec encryption of private data, skipping unsecured WAN IP connections. The entire painting is encrypted, in other words, anything is completely unusable. Your company confidential and "how until" will stay safe even if you copy the primary site data to another place.

CHAP authentication provides additional security.

Starwind supports critical event logging to assist in troubleshooting. It also supports email notification monitoring events, with help from SNMP.

The local 32-bit and 64-bit binaries for the x86 and x64 machines. Unlike some iSCSI target homes, we do not force our customers to use 32-bit binaries (AMD64 and EMT64) on x64 machines in the WOW (Windows on Windows) emulation mode.

When using Microsoft ISCSI Initiator, Starwind supports MPIO (multi-path I/O) through multiple sessions.

The Starwind has an iSCSI DVD-ROM emulation that supports built-in. It outputs an existing DVD-ROM ISO image as an installed iSCSI DVD-ROM drive. This prevents the original DVD-ROM media from being physically damaged or lost, allowing the client machine to have no drives, and can store DVDs for backup data on a single server.

Fully compliant with the latest iSCSI Standard 1.0 (former Draft 20).

Second, install Stardwind (Windows Server)

Installation version Starwind 5.4

If you are using a Windows 2003 system, install Microsoft_iscsi_initiator on the system first,

If the Windows Server system comes with it, you do not need to install it.
