Copying an. XDB File

You can update any Symantec AntiVirus server or client by downloading. XDB file from Symantec. you can also copy. XDB file from the vphome share on any Symantec AntiVirus server. the modified Date of. XDB file matches the date of the virus definitions. when using this method, rtvscan. EXE checks for new. XDB files, and then initiates the update process. rtvscan. EXE checks for new. XDB files about every 10 minutes by default. restarting (stopping and then starting) the Symantec AntiVirus server process can be used to manually initiate the update process if you do not want to wait.

To download an. XDB file from Symantec

1. Go to the XDB folder on the Symantec FTP site.
   
   You can also find the file from the Symantec Security Response virus definitions download page.
2. Click.XDBFile with the latest date, and selectSave to diskFrom the dialog box.
3. If the. XDB file downloads with A. Zip extension, remove the. Zip extension by renaming the file.
   
   The file name shoshould be similar to the following:
   
   Vd12bc02. XDB
4. Copy. XDB file to the installation folder of the program. this can vary depending on the version of Symantec AntiVirus, the operating system, and whether you upgraded from a previous version. if you are not sure of your installation location, see the "determine your installation directory" section of this document. the default installation directories are:
   • For NetWare servers, the default location is SYS: Sav.
   • For antivirus servers on Windows operating systems, the default is c: \ Program Files \ sav \ for Symantec AntiVirus 8.x, or C: \ Program Files \ Symantec AntiVirus for Symantec AntiVirus 9. x.
   • For clients running Windows 2000/XP, the default is either c: \ Documents ents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ symantec \ Norton Antivirus illegal ate edition \ 7.5 \ or C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ symantec \ Symantec AntiVirus premiate edition \ 7.5 \.

   • For clients running Windows NT 4.0, the default is c: \ winnt \ profiles \ All Users \ Application Data \ symantec \ Norton Antivirus illegal ate edition \ 7.5 \.
   • For clients running Windows 98/Me, the default is c: \ Program Files \ symantec_client_security \ Symantec AntiVirus \ or c: \ Program Files \ Symantec AntiVirus \.

Determine your installation directory

You can use one of the following methods to determine your installation directory.

To inspect the vphome share

1. Right-click onMy computerAnd click onManage.
2. In the left column of the Computer Management window, expand system tools, expand shared folders and click onShares.
3. In the right column locate the vphome share and inspect the shared path column for the location of the share (and installation ).

To inspect the installedapps registry key

1. Click onStart>Run.
2. Type in "Regedit" without the quotes and clickOK.
3. Navigate to and select the following registry key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ symantec \ installedapps
   

4. With that key selected, locate the savce value in the right column. The data value of this key is the installation directory of the program.

Symantec provides a batch file that you can schedule to update the definitions with the latest. XDB file. this batch file automatically downloads and extracts the latest.
