Do you remember the first time you used the Linux system? Like everyone else, maybe you have a painful installation experience, perhaps you also use FIPS or partition magic to increase your hard disk space, perhaps you have been cautious, scary, afraid of their own misoperation caused by the hard drive system necrosis. You often get headaches for doing this in a little-known Linux system, but now there is a good way to solve the problem---use demolinux.

Demolinux was first known to people at the 2000 Paris Fair for Linux products. Demolinux makes it possible for users to try out the Linux operating system without actually having to install it. All it needs is a bootable CD, no hard disk partitions, no lengthy installation and upfront work. Different versions of Demolinux are developed based on different Linux packages. Demolinux was developed mainly by 3 experts from the University of Parisⅶ in France. So far, more and more people are beginning to understand the existence and importance of demolinux. Demolinux strives to improve itself and make it work for most PCs, providing users with a pleasant experience and doing well. Its latest version is Demolinux 3.01.

Start Demolinux

Demolinux, which runs in a single graphics environment, requires at least 32MB of memory space and requires 64MB of memory space to run in a more advanced graphics environment (KDE or GNOME), while running the StarOffice suite requires at least 128MB of memory. Why is Demolinux's demand for memory so great? The reason is that it has not been really installed from the beginning to the end, so there is no swap space to use. By default, all active components and all operating systems must always occupy memory.

Demolinux requires a CD-ROM, a PS/2 or serial mouse, but does not necessarily require a hard drive. Demolinux has three versions in English, French and Spanish. Users can also choose whether to have a demolinux version with StarOffice.

You should first insert the CD and change the system's CMOS settings to boot from CD-ROM when the installation starts. Of course, if the user has the appropriate CD-ROM driver in a DOS environment, you can also start demolinux from a DOS environment.

During startup, users need to answer a few simple questions, such as choosing a language and keyboard type, and so on. The system also asks the user whether to use a DHCP server to determine network parameters or to enter parameter information manually. In short, the installation process is simple.

Try the Linux system

When the system starts, the user may find it very slow. This is not difficult to understand because all programs are loaded from the CD-ROM, not from a high-speed hard drive. However, those who are accustomed to demolinux will probably eventually choose to use the regular Linux system suite to speed up the operation.

Users will click on the "demo" User icon to enter the Demolinux system, and then choose a graphic environment type, such as KDE2, Gnome or TWM, and finally click the "Go" button on it. "Demo" or "root" user names do not require any password.

Most Linux system users are not unfamiliar with KDE or gnome, yet they know little about TWM. TWM is all called the Tab window manager, which is a very simple X-window window manager. It does not use any icons. Users need to click on the background, open menu items to complete the work. For users with less machine memory, the TWM window manager is their first choice.

For large memory machines, users can use KDE or gnome. At this point, they will find that the Demolinux research and development team to provide users with a number of beautiful wallpaper and color scheme to choose, and strive to give users a wonderful feeling of operation. Icons on the desktop include all of the available partitions for Windows or Linux systems. Users can run Demolinux on a single Windows PC and can save files on any system-supported Windows partition.

Another interesting feature of Demolinux is its anchor function. Users can create two files in the same Windows partition by clicking on the anchor icon, which will provide two areas for Demolinux, one for the swap area and one for the workspace. When the system restarts, users can automatically store files in the root directory on disk without making any selections, and users do not have to worry that this can affect the operation of Windows systems. To uninstall anchor, just delete the two files in the Windows drive.

Some of the problems that exist

Although the goal of Demolinux is to run a CD in all system environments, users still need to be prepared for occasional problems, especially during hardware detection and setup.

The main problem is the network. The network problems that normally occur during startup should be resolved by the DNS server, but sometimes this practice does not work. Sometimes even if the user is using a DHCP address instead of a fixed network address, the naming server still cannot appear in the display file, and the path to the gateway cannot be created. The solution to the problem above can be found in the Demolinux user Help file after the new version is fixed.
