Ubuntu 16.04 The problem of black screen after upgrading the kernel

Many people choose an update when the Ubuntu system prompts for a software update. After the reboot is also in the system, the screen is All Black, alt+ctrl+f1 can not enter the command terminal. The reason is that accidentally the kernel is updated. The new kernel must have a graphics driver installed, otherwise it will be black screen.

Upgrading the kernel is risky and sometimes unnecessary. It is recommended to delete the new kernel to solve the problem of black screen.

Step 1:

You should set grub before you upgrade, otherwise you will face a failure to start.

Vi/etc/default/grub

After opening, comment out the following line. You may see the Grub menu after booting.

#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT =0

Run: sudo update-grub command refreshes the Grub menu.

After restarting, select Legacy kernel boot.

Then through: dpkg-l | grep linux-image command to view installed kernel names

Run: sudo apt-get purge linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic Uninstall the new inner kernel.

Run sudo update-grub again to refresh the boot menu.

Step 2:

If the kernel has been accidentally upgraded, turn on the black screen directly and do not see the grub interface.

Workaround: Someone said to hold down SHIFT while powering on to display a hidden grub interface that I tried on a few times on the desktop.

It was later found that after each forced shutdown, it was not possible to enter grub again. You can perform a Alt+ctrl+del reboot only if you see the word Kubuntu in the boot process (or try to enter the BIOS), and then the Grub interface pops up again on the system.

Select Advance Ubuntu then select a kernel (recovery mode) Select Grub Recovery, the system will automatically recover grub, and then choose Reboot into Normal mode. Then you can get into the system.

If you enter a new kernel, the system still does not have a video card. Alt+ctrl+f1 after entering the terminal interface, you can at least complete the grub changes in step 1.

I tried to install the graphics driver for the new kernel (4.13.0-36): First install 384.90 failed, the problem is similar to: Click on the Open link

So go to nvidia website Download 390.25, although the installation was successful, the back can start X service, but in the login interface password can not start the desktop, dead loop in this place.

Follow the advice of some articles to reload the desktop: sudo apt-get install--reinstall ubuntu-desktop but not installed. The questions are as follows:

After login I am facing few problems, so I tried reinstalling ubuntu-desktop and unity, but I was getting error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies: Ubuntu-desktop:depends:checkbox-gui But it is isn't going to be
 Insta lled
Recommends:python3-aptdaemon.pkcompat But it is isn't going to be installed
Recommends:unity-webapps-common But it isn't going to being installed
e:unable to correct problems, you have held.

After the tragedy, the new and old two cores are not able to enter such as the desktop, unity and plasma two are not. Try this click to open the links above a few commands to download the PPA pakages although it can reload the kubbuntu-desktop but still cannot access the desktop environment.

Later found that through this command can be installed successfully.

sudo aptitude install Ubuntu-desktop

But still can't get into the desktop environment. Accidentally found that the guest user can actually go in ...

So the problem is simple, AddUser creates a new user and then goes into the desktop environment. The original user must have a configuration item that caused the driver load to fail.

Take two users the following file is found one at a to the next. The Xauthority file is owned by the root user through the sudo chown. Xauthority user:user then switch to desktop, login successful ....
