What is VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure):

By consolidating servers for the enterprise, using VMware for Virtual machine deployment, leveraging server resources to implement multiple virtual machines from a single physical machine to address resource waste.

The benefits of VMware VDI derive from the success of VMware Server virtualization and its proven benefits for IT. In VDI, ESX server contains not a series of virtual servers, but virtual desktops, each of which is loaded or dynamically provisioned using the user's operating system and application. It has a familiar user experience. This is a VMware solution, not a product, because it involves using virtualization to provide virtual desktops to users.

First, working principle:

VMware VDI is easy to manage and integrates with VMware Infrastructure 3 and VMware Virtual Desktop Manager 2, managing multiple PC systems running on the datacenter and distributing them securely and flexibly to clients. First, users need the following steps to use VMware VDI:

1. Create a virtual machine on the ESX server

2. Install VDI Proxy Connection

3. Install a desktop operating system on a virtual machine, such as Windows XP or Windows Vista

4. Then install the desktop application on the virtual machine

5. Allow remote access to virtual desktop systems using any of the possible remote control options over the network

Typical VMware VDI environments include the following components: VMware Infrastructure 3, VMware Virtual Desktop Manager, client. In addition, Microsoft Active Directory is required to run the VMware Virtual Desktop Manager software.

While running VMware VDI, you can use VMware Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM), an enterprise-class desktop Management Server that securely connects users to virtual desktops in the datacenter and provides easy-to-use web-based Interface to manage the centralized environment. Enterprises can run desktops inside virtual machines located in a central datacenter. With the VMware Virtual Desktop Manager Connection Broker, users can access these desktops remotely from a PC or thin client through a remote display protocol such as RDP. To display the VMware VDI environment structure diagram:

Using VMware VDI provides both tight control of enterprise assets and simplified desktop management. This comprehensive desktop virtualization solution enables users to manage virtual machines from the data center, replacing traditional PCs.

Ii. Advantages of Vmware VDI:

Vmware VDI says on its official website that users who support remote and branch offices can access virtual desktops located in the data center and can improve the desktop security of remote workers and home workers. By centralizing the desktop of the data center, enterprises can benefit from increased management and control. End users can access their familiar enterprise desktops from any location, which can benefit a single end user.

In other words, Enterprise desktop virtualization has gone a step further, removing computers from desktops and replacing them with ultra-small, fully secure, intelligent network application terminals that connect to their respective virtual desktops in the data center. By consolidating into desktop environments in the datacenter, organizations can provide a secure, stand-alone desktop that is always available. Centrally manage and access each Intelligent network application terminal from anywhere on the network. This allows the IT department to:

1, reduce personal computer maintenance costs

2. Improve safety

3. Deploy the Complete PC desktop on the central server

4, within minutes can set up the Working Group and the entire department

VDI is a server-based computing technology, but it offers some compelling advantages over Terminal Services or shared application solutions:

1. Unlike application sharing technologies, VMware VDI desktops running on centralized servers are completely independent, helping to prevent unauthorized access to desktop images while increasing reliability.

2. Using virtual machine templates and automatic deployment features makes it easy to deploy VMware desktops. And there is no need to change the application because users can access the same desktop only through remote connections.

3. Companies can use VMware Infrastructure 3 components, such as VMware Consolidated Backup, and shared storage to provide desktop disaster recovery capabilities that are not currently available in the Terminal Services solution.

4. VMware VDI continues to enjoy some of the compelling benefits of server-based computing, including simplified desktop management and the ability to upgrade and patch systems from a central location.

VMware VDI also avoids some of the drawbacks of most blade PC technologies (another server-based computing technology). Blade PCs that do not take advantage of VMware virtualization technology require a dedicated blade pc for each desktop, which requires significant cost. With VMware VDI, companies can achieve the same benefits that desktop virtualization technology can bring in consolidation and efficiency, while still providing customizable personal desktops for end users.

Third, the development of inadequate:

In the case of having many of the above, VMware VDI certainly has some shortcomings. Through the testers ' reports, the main problem with VMware VDI is the need for strong data center support. For example, in the process of running, each XP image can only be provided to one client, and N clients using network mirroring, to establish n such an XP image in the data center, ESX to run N XP system. This is a high requirement for data storage devices. VMware VDI is more suitable for large enterprises with a broad data center or disk array.

Frankly speaking, small and medium-sized enterprises deploy VDI is not worth. First, the network architecture requires relatively high, need more perfect data storage center, equipment cooling, monitoring and other systems with the data center continuous and efficient work. Secondly, the complexity of management technology greatly improved, although the original peck of rice that support reduced costs, but the cost of server management increased, so many small and medium-sized enterprises on the deployment of virtualization also hold a wait and see attitude.
