Virtual Machine Management for Hyper-V R2 hands-on experiments

In the newly released Windows Server 2008 R2, for virtualization, we are deeply impressed by the real-time migration of Hyper-V R2, support for a maximum of 384 virtual machines, hot addition/removal of virtual storage, and many other new features. In this series of hands-on experiments, we will conduct Step by Step learning on Hyper-V R2 installation, configuration of Hyper-V R2 settings and virtual networks, virtual hard disks and virtual machines, virtual machine settings, snapshots, and high availability, it lays a good foundation for you to fully understand Hyper-V R2.

This article describes how to configure virtual machine settings and monitor Hyper-V performance.

Configure Virtual Machine Settings

Task A: Configure key VM settings

Steps:

1. Open Hyper-V Manager.

2. In the Virtual Machines panel, click SEA-WEB-01.

3. On the Action Panel, under SEA-WEB-01, click Settings.

4. the Settings for SEA-WEB-01 dialog box appears. In the left-side pane, click Processor under Hardware.

5. Review useful information through the links of More about virtual processors and More about resource control.

6. In the Virtual machine reserve (percentage) area, enter 20.

7. In the Virtual machine limit (percentage) area, enter 80.

8. In the Relative weight area, enter 75.

9. Click Apply.

10. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Start Action.

11. On the right panel, click Always start this virtual machine automatically.

12. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Stop Action.

13. In the details panel, review settings.

14. Click OK.

15. On the Virtual Machines panel, click the SEA-SQL-01.

16. In the Action Panel, under the SEA-SQL-01, click Settings.

17. The Settings for SEA-SQL-01 dialog box appears, in the left pane, under Hardware, click Processor.

18. In the Virtual machine reserve (percentage) area, enter 20.

19. In the Virtual machine limit (percentage) area, enter 80.

20. In the Relative weight area, enter 50.

21. Click Apply.

22. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Start Action.

23. On the right panel, click Always start this virtual machine automatically.

24. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Stop Action.

25. In the right pane, click Shut down the guest operating system.

26. Click OK.

Task B: Configure non-critical VM settings

Steps:

1. on the Virtual Machines panel, click the SEA-WRK-001.

2. In the Action Panel, under the SEA-WRK-001, click Settings.

3. the Settings for SEA-WRK-001 dialog box appears, on the left side, under Hardware, click Processor.

4. In the Virtual machine reserve (percentage) area, enter 0.

5. In the Virtual machine limit (percentage) area, enter 20.

6. In the Relative weight area, enter 25.

7. Click Apply.

8. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Start Action.

9. In the right pane, click Nothing.

10. In the left-side pane, under Management, click Automatic Stop Action.

11. On the right panel, click Turn off the virtual machine.

12. Click OK.
