Unity's Visual Studio integration is divided into two parts:
1) Unity creates and maintains VisualStudio engineering files. Use the Express and Professional editions for development.
2) When you double-click a script or error in unity, unity will automatically open VisualStudio. Available for professional editions only.

I have installed the Visual Studio Express version, how to use it?

• Select Menu Resource (Assets), Sync VisualStudio Project in Unity (Sync VisualStudio Project)
• Find the most recently created. sln file (Assets) folder on the top-level folder in the Unity project
• Open this file with Visual Studio Express.
• Now you can edit all of the script files and revert to Unity using them.

I already have Visual Studio Pro installed, how do I use it?

• Open edit, Preferences (Preferences) in Unity, making sure that Visual Studio is selected as the preferred external editor.
• Double-click the C # file in the project. Visual Studio will automatically open this file.
• You can edit the file, save it, and return to Unity.

Precautions:

• Although Visual Studio has its own C # compiler, you can use it to check for errors in C # scripts, but Unity still compiles your scripts using its own C # compiler. Using the Visual Studio compiler is still useful because it means that you do not have to always cut back to Unity to check for errors.
• The Visual Studio C # compiler has more functionality than the current Unity C # compiler. This means that some code, especially the updated C # features, will not fail in Visual Studio, but will fail in Unity.
• Unity automatically creates and maintains Visual Studio. sln and. csproj files. Once any user adds/renames/moves/deletes files in unity, unity rebuilds the. sln and. csproj files. You can add files to the solution from Visual Studio. Unity will import these new files, and the next time unity creates the project file, the new files will be included.
• After the assetserver or SVN update, Unity will not regenerate the Visual Studio project files. You can manually request Unity to regenerate the Visual Studio project files through the Sync VisualStudio Project (Sync VisualStudio Project) menu, which is available through the resources (Assets).
