"We think open source components are an important part of our products and actively participate in many projects, and we continue to create new and interesting open source projects in the future," said Dirk Hohndel, chief open source officer at VMware.
Hohndel leads VMware's Open source project Office to guide efforts and strategies around the use and contribution of open source projects, as well as the shared values and processes that drive VMware's engagement with the open source community throughout the company. Prior to joining VMware, he worked as Intel's chief Linux and open source technology specialist for nearly 15 years, and since the early 1990s he has been an active developer and contributor to Linux and open source software.

In the following interview, Hohndel mentions a lot about how Linux and open source are an integral part of the VMware business and how they participate in the open source community.
Q: About VMware?
A:vmware is a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology. We help our customers build and grow a scalable production IT environment that delivers on-premise or hybrid cloud solutions that meet their needs. In addition, we provide our customers with modern end-user computing solutions that enable users to access critical applications, desktops and services using any device or platform.
Q: Why use Linux and open source?
A:vmware uses many open source components as part of a solution for customers. Linux is the key customer (and host) operating system we support and the foundation of many customer solutions that run on our infrastructure.
We believe that open source components are an important part of the product and actively participate in many projects. The future also continues to create new and interesting open source projects such as the project clarity Design system or the Project Harbor container image registry.
Q: Why increase your commitment to the Linux Foundation?
A: We believe that the Linux Foundation is one of the key alliances in the broader open source ecosystem. Meanwhile, over the past few years, we have steadily increased our cooperation with other projects and foundations such as Onap, cncf, cloud Foundry. Given the role of its projects in our business, it is meaningful to increase our participation and support for the Linux Foundation.
Q: What are some interesting or innovative technical trends that you have witnessed, and what role do Linux and open source software play in them? How does vmware participate in innovation?
The A:IT infrastructure industry is evolving. An increasing number of related solution stacks are built around open source components, and many companies are collaborating to accelerate the transformation of industry verticals. The recently launched Onap project is a good example of this trend, and VMware is one of the founding platinum sponsors of this project.
Q: How does the Linux and open source community change VMware?
A:vmware is a technology-driven company. Working with the Linux and open source community has helped us accelerate the development process and allow us to work with other partners and customers in this field to provide better solutions.
Q: What else is important or coming up that you would like to share?
