Vsphere Deployment Series 01 about VMware Virtualization
First, about VMware
It's no doubt that VMware is a company that is now the boss of virtualization.
VMware's products are named after VMware, with a wide product line, from the familiar personal desktop virtual computer software workstation, player to server virtualization Solutions vsphere, VCloud, desktop, and Application Virtualization Solutions horizon, All in one, involving up to dozens of software, so that beginners are dazzled and confused.
We often say VMware virtualization, mainly refers to VMware vsphere Server virtualization solution, this is VMware's server products, including ESXi, a set of management tools, can deploy small and medium-sized private cloud infrastructure. Another VMware VCloud suite, based on vsphere, adds management tools such as VCloud director for deploying a public cloud infrastructure in a medium to large data center.
Second, VMware Server virtualization Products
On the network has predecessors on the VMware2014 year all products have been combed, still worth reference, learning, where the server virtualization product list, cited as follows:
A, data center and cloud infrastructure products
VMware ESXi, the virtualized core component of all VMware server products, is installed directly on physical bare metal, with ESXi at the core of Vcloud and vsphere. )
VMware VSphere with Operations Management
VMware vSphere Storage Appliance (Storage Cluster management tool)
VMware VSphere Data Protection Advanced (data Backup component)
VMware NSX (Components for network virtualization)
VMware Virtual SAN (software-defined storage platform components for shared storage)
VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (Data Recovery management tool)
VMware Virsto (management tools for storage virtualization. )
B, data center and cloud management products
VMware vcenter Server (vcenter component is the Management control Center for all server products)
VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite
VMware VCenter Operations Manager
VMware VCenter Configuration Manager
VMware VCenter Hyperic
VMware VCenter Log Insight
VMware VCloud Director (Management component of VCloud)
VMware VCloud Automation Center
VMware VCenter Orchestrator
VMware IT Business Management Suite (IT infrastructure and service Management suite)
Third, VSphere 5 software release
This series of articles is about deployment and practices for VMware Server virtualization, vsphere 5 products, so this is just about the version of Vsphere 5.
Vertically, since the first version of VMware ESX was released in 2001, Vsphere has evolved over 6 generations and the latest product is Vsphere 6 (2015). The first two generations were simpler, just a standalone virtualization manager, until the 3rd generation (2006, when it was not called vsphere, but called Virtual Infrastructure 3) to aggregate resources into a unified entity. The vsphere framework we see now starts with the 4th generation of Products (2009, vsphere 4). The current market is widely used in the 5th generation (2011, VSphere 5), including vSphere5.0, vSphere5.1 and vSphere5.5 three separate versions.
From the horizontal perspective, vsphere is divided into simple version, Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition of three categories, the difference is mainly reflected in some advanced functions, such as Ft,drs. The free edition only uses Vsphere's basic virtual manager functionality, which is limited to 3 hosts and can only be managed by vsphere client, which is directly connected to the host, and not by Vcenter server.
There are 5 versions of VSphere 51, respectively:
VSphere Essentials
VSphere Essentials Plus
VSphere Standard
VSphere Enterprise
VSphere Enterprise Plus
The former two are for the small and medium-sized enterprises, for the free version; the latter three are for medium and large enterprises, for the paid version, during the deployment process, the default has a 60-day trial period, long-term use of the need to purchase a license.
A list of vSphere5.0 features found on the Web (vSphere5.5, but both versions and functions are basically the same)

Iv. VSphere 5 Licensing
Starting with vsphere 5, VMware users pay licensing fees based on the physical processor and the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine. Each vsphere 5 processor is licensed with a certain amount of VRAM capacity--configurable to the virtual machine's memory capacity (known as the VRAM Pool), which represents the configurable memory of the VM (launched) in Vcenter.
Each vsphere version of the VRAM licensing capacity is: The standard version of the VRAM Licensing 32GB, Enterprise Edition of VRAM Licensing 64GB, enterprise-enhanced version of the VRAM authorization 96GB (as shown). Here's an example: for example, a standard version of Vsphere 5 license pool, each CPU can use 32GB VRAM, now two dual processors (two CPU slots above the CPU) of the Dell R720 server, which requires 4 Standard Edition license. These 4 licenses allow the virtual machines configured (and started) to have a total of 4X32GB=128GB memory in the VRAM pool (even if the actual server physical memory capacity reaches 256GB, it can only use 128GB). If each virtual machine is configured with 4GB of memory, then 32 virtual machines (simultaneous) are allowed to run in the pool. To extend VRAM, simply add more Standard Edition licenses to the memory pool.
These are only the licenses for Vsphere 5, and VCenter Sever 5 requires an additional purchase license. The two are sold separately. VCenter server unifies all hosts and virtual machines in the datacenter from a single console, which aggregates performance monitoring capabilities for clusters, hosts, and virtual machines. For enterprises, the use of VCenter sever is essential in large-scale virtualized environments.
Each vcenter sever instance requires a license, and there are three types of vcenter sever licenses, respectively, as follows:
VCenter Server for Essentials: Versions included in the vsphere Essentials suite;
VCenter Server for foundation version: For small-scale deployments, providing management support for three servers;
VCenter Server Standard: For large-scale deployments, the number of unrestricted hosts can be managed.
Each licensed version of VCenter Sever provides the following components: The Management Server, the database server, the search engine, the VSphere client,web access portal, the VCenter API, and the. net extension that provides remote access and integration with other systems. To provide remote access and integration with other systems.
V. About VMWARE Certifications
Here, incidentally, VMware certification. Certification weight is not important, determined by the work environment, but from a personal point of view, to participate in certification training, examination, is a way to grow quickly. In general, certification identifies specific levels of knowledge and competencies in a specific area. Of course, for manufacturers and training institutions, this is a very lucrative area.
The VMware Certified circuit diagram below allows you to test the latter with the former:
VCP (VMware certified Professional,vmware certified specialist);
VCAP (Senior expert in VMware Certified Advanced Professional,vmware,vmware certification), including VCAP-DCA Data center management, VCAP-DCD Data Center design two directions;
VCDX (VMware certified design expert,vmware certified expert).
VCP certification is very basic, but also the data center virtualization, network virtualization, desktop and mobile office, and so on, commonly referred to as VCP certification refers to VCP-DCV, that is, data center virtualization. Obtaining this certificate indicates the basic skills and knowledge to operate vsphere. Many of the hiring requirements for virtualization are mentioned in this certification.
The VPC certification must first take the original training course (no matter how rich your experience), otherwise you will not be eligible to take the exam. I was at the end of 2014 to participate in training, VCP5.5-DVC (VMware VCP certified Experts-Data Center virtualization), training fee plus test fee is 9600 yuan, training for four days, after the end of the training to receive the test voucher (valid for six months, within the validity period, The official online to determine the test time and examination room, and take the exam as scheduled, at the end of the exam can see the results, and finally in June 2015 to take the exam and successfully passed.
The new version of VCP6.0 in the second half of 2015 to begin the examination (as if August 30, 2016 released the official version), VCP5.5 probably stopped at the end of 2016. This indicates that vsphere is over-vSphere5.5 from 5.5 to 6.0, but the current scope of use is still the widest.
Follow-up blog, will be divided into chapters on a vSphere5.5-based virtualization platform deployment process, generally speaking, the content of comparative basis, is really laughable, but the knowledge learned, after practice and then according to their own ideas written, after all, is a knowledge combing and thinking exercise process, is worthwhile.
