Starting with vsphere 5, VMware users pay licensing fees based on the physical processor and the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine. Each vsphere version of the VRAM licensing capacity is: The standard version of the VRAM Licensing 32GB, Enterprise Edition of VRAM Licensing 64GB, enterprise-enhanced version of the VRAM authorization 96GB (as shown). To extend VRAM, simply add more Standard Edition licenses to the memory pool.

These are only the licenses for Vsphere 5, and VCenter Sever 5 requires an additional purchase license. The two are sold separately. VCenter server unifies all hosts and virtual machines in the datacenter from a single console, which aggregates performance monitoring capabilities for clusters, hosts, and virtual machines. For enterprises, the use of VCenter sever is essential in large-scale virtualized environments.

Each vcenter sever instance requires a license, and there are three types of vcenter sever licenses, respectively, as follows:

VCenter Server for Essentials: Versions included in the vsphere Essentials suite;
