Preparation conditions
a healthy Win7 or Win8.1 operating system; Ubuntu official system image file, backup of important files in Windows system disk, some knowledge about Linux partition mount, get EASYBCD software; You have read this article;
Step 1

Under Windows operating system, empty a hard disk partition, or split a new partition from an existing partition. Ubuntu will be installed in this partition. You can use some well-known disk utility software (partition assistant, Diskgenius, etc.) to split the new zone.

Example:

As shown, theC-drive is the Win8.1 system disk , thee -Drive is the new partition I split from the original C drive (when using the tool to split, you can not split the space as a new partition, Because we're going to get a space that's not being used.

Step 2

After you determine the blank partition, delete the partition so that it is not visible in Windows Explorer.

You can right-click on the "This computer" icon, go to the "management" function of the "Disk Management" interface, select a blank partition, right-click " Delete Volume ."

is the disk state before the "delete volume" operation is performed on the E disk.

Now, under the Windows operating system, the original E drive is not visible and unusable. Only the C drive is left in the resource manager:

Step 3

Install the EASYBCD software under the Windows operating system. After the installation is successful, open the software and display the language select "Chinese Simplified".

Select "Add new Entry" in the Left tool list, select the "Neogrub" tab in the upper right corner of the right ribbon and click the "Install" button. As shown in the following:

After installation, clicking on the "Configure" button will open a Notepad file named "Menu.lst". Empty the contents of the file and write the following text:

Title Install Ububtu

Root (hd0,0)

Kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz.efi boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso ro quiet Splash Locale=zh_CN . UTF-8

INITRD (hd0,0)/initrd.lz

As shown, note the spaces :

Note 1: "(hd0,0)" appears on lines 2nd, 3, and 4 of the file, pointing to the location of the current system disk, I am here C drive. However, if the C drive is not the first partition, but the second one, it needs to be modified to "(hd0,1)", and so on.

Note 2: On the third line of the file, "Ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso" is the file name of my Ubuntu system image and modifies it to yours.

Note 3: The third line of the file appears "Vmlinuz.efi", because I installed Ubuntu is 64-bit operating system, here must be "Vmlinuz.efi", cannot lack the extension.

Step 4

Use the compression tool to open the Ubuntu image file, copy the ". Disk" folder and the "Initrd.lz" and "Vmlinuz.efi" files in the Casper folder to the C packing directory, and then copy the Ubuntu system image file to the C packing directory:

Restart the computer, see the operating system selection in the startup screen, select "Neogrub boot loader":

After the Ubuntu selection screen appears, select "Install Ubuntu".

Note: A "File not found" error may occur here:

The reason is generally in the previous "menu.lst" file parameters are not configured, but do not need to restart the computer to set up, because the boot interface has given us a way to temporarily modify the parameters:

Still select "Installubuntu", press keyboard E to enter the Modify interface:

Three of the "(hd0,0)" In the modification, the preceding 0 represents the first few hard disks, "0" for the number one, and the next 0 is the partition of a hard disk in the section. The modification method here has also been given, keyboard e modified, keyboard d removed, keyboard B confirmed and started :

Note: Win7, WIN8 system when installed, the default will be in the system disk before the creation of a hundreds of-megabyte system dedicated partition, so if the C drive is the system disk, here the parameters are generally "HD (0,1)"

Step 6

After successfully entering the Ubuntu trial interface, there are two files on the desktop.

Press Ctrl+alt+t to open the terminal, enter "sudo umount–l/isodevice", cancel the optical drive mount, or you may have unlimited card progress during the subsequent installation process:

Note: Note the space, and the "L" in "-L" is the lowercase form of the uppercase "L" . Not the number 1, nor the letter "I".

Step 7

Double-click the desktop icon "install Ubuntu14.04 LTS" to start installing Ubuntu.

If you are connected to a network, you can choose to download the update in the installation, which will increase the installation time, or you can download and install the update after installing the Ubuntu system.

There are several installation options in the installation type interface:

If you select the first item, Ubuntu will automatically partition the installation and then coexist with the Windows operating system as a two-systems. Select this option for users with no detailed requirements for partitioning, this tutorial can skip steps Step7, Step8. If you want to customize the partition, select other options. Here, I select "Other options".

The partition status of our entire hard drive is shown:

We're going to install Ubuntu in the "Free" partition. Select the "Free" section, and then click the plus sign at the lower-left red line to partition it.

With regard to the partitioning of Linux, many Windows users with fixed thinking still crawl on the path of understanding, partitioning is not the focus of this article, it should read the professional articles on Linux partitioning.

The root directory "/" is a must exist , can be divided into 8G to "/".

swap partition Swap does not have to exist and can be allocated without allocating space, which also means that you can distribute all the space to "/".

"/boot" does not have to exist, if your hard disk is an Ubuntu single system, it is recommended to allocate space, generally less than 200M, and set it as the first partition, if your hard disk is not a single system, but as described in this article, the dual system, do not have to allocate space.

"/home" is used to save the user's files, and if you want to save large amounts of data, you need to allocate more space.

"/user" is mainly used to save the application files, if you want to install many programs, you need to allocate more space. You can consider allocating the maximum space for it.

You need to select the file system type when partitioning, select "Ext4".

Note: If your memory is small, the swap partition size should be larger than the physical memory size, but smaller than the physical memory size multiplied by 2, and if your memory is large enough, the swap partition is allocated 1G to 2G and can even be unassigned. However, if you want to install some of the mandatory swap partition software, you must be assigned, if you are not sure if the future installation of a software to force the need to swap partitions, it is best to allocate , generally 1G.

Step 8

After the partition is complete, start the installation.

If you do not allocate swap space, the system will give you a hint and skip.

When the installation is complete, select Restart. If everything is OK, you can see the Ubuntu-style startup Options screen as shown:

Step 9 Finishing work

In the system boot interface, the Win8.1 system is in the last item, if you need to put Win8.1 in the first item, you can set this:

1. Enter Ubuntu system.

2, Ctrl+alt+t Open the terminal, enter "sudo nautilus" to open the resource manager with root privileges.

3. Locate the "30_os-prober" file and change its name to "06_os-prober" to:

Enter the Windows system and clear the files that were copied before the C drive.

Open EasyBCD, in the previous "Add new entry" function, click on the "Delete" button, clear "Neogrub" boot.

Possible problems with Step 10 multiple drives

In the case of multiple drives, the "(hd0,0)" mentioned earlier requires more attention.

I personally added an SSD to my laptop before installing the dual system and loaded the Windows8.1 operating system into it. This creates a dual-system landscape of Win8.1 (c-drive) and HDD-Win7 (D-drives) within the SSD. But the problem here is that the Win7 is installed first, the SSD is the subsequent acquisition of the hard disk, although the HDD in the system partition was emptied, but the Windows boot file is still in the HDD drive. When installing Ubuntu, unable to delete the D drive in the win system, then use Diskgenius to delete the D drive, the boot file is lost. For some reason, you cannot use the system CD or repair disc to repair the boot, only select the reload system. However, in the process of reinstalling the system using the Windows system CD, you can format any partition, but you cannot install the Win7 or Win8.1 operating system to any partition. After many experiments, the solution to my problem was to remove the HDD and keep only one drive, so that Windows could be installed successfully. After the system has been installed successfully, the HDD is put in and the Ubuntu can be installed smoothly.
