Workflow Terms and Definitions

Workflow	It is very simple. It is the process from the beginning to the completion of the work. A workflow consists of process logic and route rules. The process logic defines the task sequence and the route rules that must be followed, as well as the deadline and other business rules implemented by the workflow engine.
Process Definition	A graphical process definition or flow chart represents the flow logic elements of a workflow and the relationship between each element.
Process instance	A process instance, usually called a job, is a running instance defined by a process.
Workflow Management System	A software application that stores process definitions and uses its workflow engine components to define running tasks based on these processes. The workflow engine is a runtime execution module.
Process definition tool	A software tool used to create and change process definitions. This tool can be a component of business process management software, an independent application, or a component of a workflow management system. The process definition tool provides the ability to reuse stored workflow elements or even all sub-processes, which increases the productivity of workflow application developers, because they avoid re-inventing these wheels (applications) when building a workflow and integrating other applications in the workflow ).

Activity	A task that forms a logical step in a process definition. It can be automatic or manual. Automatic refers to the ability to define scripts and triggers during process operations. If a work item fails to be completed before the predefined deadline, the management can automatically send a reminder message or trigger an extension program.
Activity owner	The activity owner is the participant who has the right to announce the completion of an activity and then push the work to the next activity in the process.
Work owner	The work owner is the Participant with the right to control the execution process of the Process instance as a whole.
