Default instance and named instance of SQLServer

It has the advantages of convenient scalability, high degree of integration with related software, and can be used across a variety of platforms from laptops running Microsoft Windows 98 to large multi-processor running Microsoft Windows 2000.

Use Microsoft®SQL Server™2000. You can choose to install multiple copies or instances of SQL Server on one computer. When you set a new SQL Server 2000 installation or maintain an existing installation, you can specify it:

Default instance of SQL Server

This instance is identified by the Network Name of the computer that runs it. Applications of SQL Server Client Software of previous versions can be used to connect to the default instance. SQL Server 6.5 or SQL Server 7.0 servers can be used as default instances. However, only one version can be run on a computer as the default instance at a time.

SQL Server naming example

Add the Instance name <计算机名称> \ <实例名称> Format. Most applications must use the SQL Server 2000 client component to connect to the named instance. However, you can use the SQL Server 7.0 client network utility to configure the Server alias so that the SQL Server 7.0 client component can use this name to connect to the named instance of SQL Server 2000.

A computer can run any number of SQL Server naming instances at the same time. The instance can also be installed and run as an existing SQL Server 6.5 or SQL Server 7.0. The instance name cannot exceed 16 characters.

The new instance name must start with a letter, "," Sign (&), or underscore (_) and can contain numbers, letters, or other characters. The SQL Server System name and retention name cannot be used as the Instance name. For example, the term "default" cannot be used as the Instance name because it is a reserved name used by the installer.

When you use SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition, SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, or SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, one or more SQL Server 2000 instances (default or name) are available.

Default instance

The default instance of SQL Server 7.0 cannot be installed on a computer running SQL Server 2000 at the same time. You must install and upgrade SQL Server 7.0 to the default instance of SQL Server 2000, or retain the default instance of SQL Server 7.0 and install the named instance of SQL Server 2000.

You can install the default instance of SQL Server 6.5 on a computer running SQL Server 2000. However, the default instances of SQL Server 6.5 and SQL Server 2000 cannot run simultaneously. You must use the vswitch command of SQL Server 2000 to prompt the utility to switch between them.

Multiple instances

When a computer is installed with Multiple SQL Server 2000 instances, multiple instances are displayed. Operations on each instance are separated from any other instance on the same computer, and applications can connect to any instance. The number of instances that can run on a single computer depends on the available resources. SQL Server 2000 supports up to 16 instances.

When You Install SQL Server 2000 on a computer that has not installed SQL Server, the installer specifies to install the default instance. However, by clearing the "default" option in the "Instance name" dialog box, you can also choose to Install SQL Server 2000 as the named instance.

You can install the SQL Server 2000 naming instance at any time: before installing the default instance of SQL Server 2000, after installing the default instance of SQL Server 2000, or replacing the default instance of SQL Server 2000.

Each named instance is composed of a set of services that are not repeated and can be set completely differently for sorting rules and other options. The directory structure, registry structure, and service name all reflect the specified Instance name.
