There have been rumors about Google PageRank (PR: page level) recently, saying that PR, which plays an important role in Google ranking algorithms, is gradually losing its significance. In the past few days, there have been more articles titled "Google expresses PageRank for entertainment only. This is all because a user named JohnGalt posted the following post in the "search engine new observation Forum", and he claims that this message is indeed from someone inside Google.
PageRank shown on the Google Toolbar has always been a professional tool for us to measure the importance and ranking of our websites, but it is only for entertainment. As hackers constantly attempt to attack this data on the toolbar, this data poses security risks. Therefore, Google does not update this data in a timely manner. The PR displayed on the toolbar is several months behind the actual PR of the website. For example, if a website shows PR0, it should be a new website that has been searched and indexed by Google, but it has not been further searched and updated. However, this website ranks well in the search results. In other words, the Google toolbar displays PR data a few months ago, but the latest PR data is used in the ranking system.
This clearly indicates that Google still uses PageRank as a factor in website ranking, but does not display the current PR data of the website on the toolbar. That is to say, we will not be able to obtain the real PR data of the website.
The message, which claims to be absolutely reliable within Google, has aroused great repercussions among the search engine optimization community. As one SEO expert said: "We all know that PageRank has not been updated in a timely manner recently, but now I am shocked to hear that Google stands up and says, 'The PageRank data displayed in the Google Toolbar is only for entertainment.
"PageRank's significance to website optimizers is self-evident. We know that external links of websites are the most important factor in determining Google's ranking, while PageRank is an evaluation mechanism for external links of websites. If Google opens PageRank data that reflects external links of a webpage to the public, its accuracy should be ensured. Otherwise, it is meaningless for Google to open this data to the public. In addition, some people think that if Google displays clearly-known and inaccurate data on the toolbar to users, it will not only mean that website optimizers do nothing to PageRank, google is also suspected of deceiving the public.
GoogleGuy defended against the above statement:
I strongly disagree with the so-called "PageRank shown in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment only. So far, more than one million Google toolbar users have used PageRank to determine the quality of a webpage. At the same time, I think JohnGalt's post is irresponsible. He claimed to have spoken to someone inside Google and then quoted this passage, which easily leads people to think that this is Google's official point of view and spread around. I would like to tell you that Google has never made the above statement for PageRank.
However, since this statement by GoogleGuy does not clearly point out that JohnGalt's conclusion is incorrect, it still cannot calm down your doubts. Some people still think that Google still uses PageRank to rank websites, but the PR displayed on the Google toolbar is not the current data of the website.
