Len (TRANSACT-SQL)

Returns the number of characters in a specified string expression, excluding trailing spaces.

Note:
To return the number of bytes used to represent the expression, use the datalength function.

Syntax

Len (string_expression)
Parameters

String_expression
The string expression to be calculated.

Return type

If the expression data type is varchar (max), nvarchar (max), or varbinary (max), it is bigint; otherwise, it is int.

Example

In the following example, select the number of characters and data in the firstname of the person in the Australia region.
