At present, the use of MySQL database is mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, the future of MySQL will promote MySQL to high-end application development.

MySQL is definitely one of the most successful projects in the Open source software world. The open source project, which was founded in 1995, has installed more than 10 million worldwide today, with a 3.8 million (the Chinese have surpassed the United States as the largest download country in May), and MySQL is also one of the four components of lamp architecture (L represents Apache on behalf of Linux,a). , M represents mysql,p for PHP or Perl).

As the most popular open-source data product, MySQL is popular with users, especially Internet users, for its ease of use, high reliability, and high performance features. A few days ago, MySQL product Executive Vice President Zack Urlocker to visit China, this reporter interviewed him, please him on MySQL Some recent research work and the future development of the introduction.

MySQL's profit model

Q: Could you tell me about the latest developments in MySQL?

A: MySQL is a small company originated in Sweden, now using the United States and Sweden dual headquarters structure, now has more than 300 employees, distributed in 24 countries, are planning to be listed this year or next year.

Globally, the popularity of MySQL is still relatively satisfactory, especially in America's emerging companies MySQL is very popular, such as YouTube, Second life is used by MySQL, And Google's very critical bidding rankings system also uses 7,000 MySQL servers. According to our survey, the main areas of MySQL's current deployment are Web applications, telecommunications, government and retailing.

Q: Can you introduce the profit model of MySQL?

A: MySQL's revenue is mainly divided into three aspects. One is service, including training, which accounts for nearly 25% of MySQL's entire income. The second part comes from partners, who sell MySQL as part of their application, selling it to their users, paying for MySQL based on their sales results, such as Huawei, Cisco and so on, which is a very important part of our revenue. The third is the consultancy service, we help enterprise customers through the network to discover the existence of MySQL database running deficiencies, so as to propose improvements, and help users improve the performance of the entire system, reduce the possibility of error. This is the fastest growing part of MySQL revenue.

Q: What do you think of the development trend of SaaS (software service)?

A: We see that software products are transforming into web-based services, such as the popularity of Salesforce.com. Google has also played a leading role in this regard, and a few years ago Google was a company that provided search engines, and now it offers a wide range of services, such as Gmail, Google Apps, and has become a web-based application provider. For MySQL, the biggest advantage is based on network applications, I think the development of MySQL is in line with this tide.

The future development of MySQL

Q: Many manufacturers are developing routes from low-end to high-end, whether the future of MySQL will be high-end?

A: Today, MySQL because of ease of use, high availability, high-performance applications in small and medium-sized enterprises is very popular, but I think the MySQL database is also suitable for data centers and high management of large-scale applications, technically there is no problem. With the success of MySQL in Internet applications, I think MySQL will also be successful in high-end enterprise applications in the future. Including Data Warehouse reports, E-commerce, database clusters and other applications will see MySQL. Now not only the operating system and database has open source, messaging systems, document management has more and more open source products, and many of the open source products are based on MySQL.

Q: IBM, Oracle, Sybase and other data providers are also providing data Warehouse products, MySQL in this regard is there any intention?

A: MySQL also has data Warehouse engine, this product is called MySim. Currently in the MySQL internal engineers specializing in the development of data Warehouse technology, now based on MySQL Data Warehouse already has terabytes, up to the 12TB level of data Warehouse.

Q: What is the plan for MySQL in the DB2 that IBM released last year added support for unstructured data, which is XML?

A: We are about to release the MySQL 5.1 is to support XML, but we have been surveyed that the current support for this application is not mainstream, in the future, according to the needs of customers, add more to the XML support capabilities.

Q: What are your expectations for MySQL in the Chinese market?

A: I think the Chinese market is a very potential market, for MySQL is of strategic significance. Now MySQL's main job in China is to build up an image, a firm footing, and to provide training programs to train people. We will continue to invest in China. At present, the MySQL in the Chinese market service support work mainly by Wanli Open source company to implement. In Wanli Open source has 15 professional MySQL certification engineers, as well as a MySQL research and Development Center and Education Center.

In addition, the 2004 Yahoo Olympic site is the choice of MySQL database, I believe that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will have more related to the Olympic MySQL application.

Q: Some time ago, Microsoft accused Open-source software of violating Microsoft's 235 patents, and whether MySQL has infringed Microsoft's patent rights?

A: MySQL did not violate Microsoft's patent, and did not violate any other people, including Oracle, DB2. The database has a long history, the technology used many years ago does not involve any software license agreement and will not violate anyone's license agreement.

Personally, I'm against software patents. At present, Europe has blocked software patent legislation, in the United States there are a lot of controversy. I think that if Microsoft says that Open-source software infringes its patent, it should be clear which one of the Open-source technologies violates its patent, but now Microsoft has not made it clear.
