While we wait for Microsoft to bring good real-time collaboration to its free Office Web apps, the company doesn't forget to add new features to its Excel Web apps. This week, Microsoft revealed several new features added to this free spreadsheet program. In an article in the Office blog, Microsoft says that the most needed and vocal is to increase the "pane freeze" feature (freeze Frames) for Excel Web applications, and that the application is now able to look at these workbooks.
Microsoft points out that this means people can see the columns at the top of the table at all times, rather than rolling up and down as they used to.
The new version also adds a way to categorize data that is not in the table: Hide or show them by clicking the Categorize command on the Ribbon main menu instead of right-clicking the Workbook tab. In addition, Excel Web applications add support for data validation and AutoComplete features.
Finally, Microsoft says more new features will be added to Excel Web Apps in the coming months.
