"IT168 evaluation" as the most commonly used in the daily office of the application server, the FTP server has a lot of work, and in the FTP server performance indicators, transmission efficiency is undoubtedly the primary factor of concern, in the FTP server to do RAID 5? Transmission performance evaluation in this article, we have described the transmission performance of the FTP server in RAID 5 mode. Today we will be on the same platform, the server do raid 1+0, RAID 0 and a single hard disk RAID 0, and then test the transmission performance of the server, further to provide customers with the purchase and application guidance.

First of all, a simple introduction of the test platform, the test of the server for the HP DL120 g7-based on a Xeon E3 platform 1U single rack server, internal configuration of 4 memory slots, up to 32GB memory, up to 4 3.5-inch hard drive can be configured.

Since this is a test of the impact of hard disk protection mode on the performance of the FTP server, the hard disk configured by this server is specifically described here.

The server is equipped with a Western data Wd5003abyx hard drive with a capacity of 500GB. We used these hard drives to build a RAID 5 array during the test.

Test environment Introduction

In order to test the network products, IT168 Evaluation Center set up a network laboratory, and built a network test environment with 60 clients, through the control side and using professional network test software, can build a diversified network access model, can produce real multi-user network application environment. High-pressure performance tests can be performed on server-class devices under different applications, with intuitive results reflecting the real performance of server products in different applications.

We use the gigabit switch as a test environment switching device, 60 single-server as the client, can generate enough network access pressure, so you can test the server class devices in the implementation of different applications of the ultimate performance.

▲ Gigabit Switch, 120 gigabit network ports

▲ Tower Server to generate user access pressure

Raid 1+0 netbench test scores

NetBench is the performance test software for the file server, the main impact of NetBench performance is the disk subsystem of the server, in the test we set up a file server on the tested server, NetBench simulates a file transfer request from a PC in a network to a file server through 60 clients in a network lab, and the file server sends the file data stored on disk to the appropriate client. As with the Webbench test, the client will connect to the server and send file transfer requests with each of the four sets of netbench after the test begins. At the end of the test, the console collects the data and draws the change curve of data transfer that the server can achieve.

Raid 1+0 test Scores

▲raid 10 Test Results curve

We see in the test results, in the RAID 10 mode, with the increasing load, the test results of the curve is broadly divided into two stages, the first stage, the total speed of transmission increases, when the load volume reached 36 or so, into the gentle phase, the total transmission speed peak of about 3600mb/s, That is, the optimal load of the FTP server is around 35, when the load continues to increase, the total transfer speed is almost no increase, and the response time is increasing, 50 load response time is about twice times the initial response time.

We know that in the previous RAID 5 mode test, the best load of about 20, and peak transmission speed even 2000mb/s, the cause of this result and the RAID mode has a large relationship, RAID 5 in the writing process requires a large number of checks, resulting in a large amount of computation, throughput capacity consumption, RAID 1+0 is not needed, which is why the final test scores are so different.

  Raid 0 NetBench test scores

▲raid 0 test scores

▲raid 0 Test Results curve

Raid 0 test scores, we see the whole curve is roughly also divided into two stages, less than 30 load, the total transmission speed rise, more than 30 times, into the slow rise phase, but the overall is a rising process; from the total transmission speed, the peak finally reached near 4000mb/s, Slightly higher than RAID 10, the reason for this is still related to the write principle of RAID 10 and RAID 0.

RAID 0 transmission performance test for a single drive

In the previous tests, we tested four hard disks for RAID 5, RAID 10, and RAID 0, and for better performance, we pulled out three of them, left one hard drive, and then did raid 0 for testing, because only a hard drive was left, So the test data is more about the performance of the hard disk itself.

Single HDD RAID 0 test scores

▲ Single HDD RAID 0 test score Curve

As seen from the test results, the single hard drive RAID 0 is similar to the test performance curve in RAID 5 mode, which is three stages, rising, peaking, and slowing down, but in terms of test results, whether it is the total transmission speed, or can bear the number of concurrent, is higher than the RAID 5, of course, the reason or raid 5 A large amount of verification work consumes a lot of resources during the writing process.

Comparison of four modes of transmission performance

▲ Four modes of test performance curve

The above results can be seen, purely from the reading and writing perspective, the RAID 0 mode effect is the best, can bear the maximum load, followed by RAID 10, a single hard drive although the raid 0, but more will reflect the performance of the hard disk itself, and the RAID 5 mode due to the process of writing, A large number of parity checks are required, with the worst results.

However, from the aspect of hard disk protection, although RAID 0 is the best performance in terms of transmission, whether it is a single hard disk RAID 0, or a group of hard disks to do RAID 0, there is no redundancy mechanism, in the event of a failure, the data is facing the risk of all loss, Raid 10 in the transmission of good results However, the minimum utilization rate of the hard disk, the popular speaking, will increase the additional cost; Raid 5, while improving in utilization, performs poorly on performance and minimizes the amount of concurrent load that can be assumed.

In the comprehensive, in the FTP server purchase and application, need to consider a number of factors, according to the budget, concurrency, storage capacity, hard disk protection mechanism and other aspects of comprehensive.
