Domain Name System (DNS) provides a way for domain names (such as ftp.microsoft.com) to resolve with the corresponding IP address or multiple addresses. DNS is a scalable, distributed resource logging database that provides name resolution for the largest network, such as the Internet. In DNS, A (address) resource record provides a name for resolving an IP address, and a PRT (pointer) resource record provides resolution of the IP address to the name. However, all computers that are running TCP/IP when you first design DNS are manually configured. When you manually configure a computer with a specific IP address, in DNS, its a resource record and PTR resource records are also manually configured.
With the advent of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), DHCP client computers are assigned IP addresses by the DHCP server. These addresses are valid for a specific lease period. If the DHCP client computer cannot be renewed or migrated to another subnet, assign a new IP address. This change in the IP address configuration of DHCP client computers makes it difficult to manage manually updating their A resource records and PTR resource records.
The workaround for keeping the latest DNS in a DHCP environment is DNS dynamic update, as described in RFC 2136.
DNS dynamic update enables DNS client computers to use a DNS server to register and dynamically update their resource records at any time that the IP address or name changes. This reduces the need to manually manage zone records, especially in the case of computers using DHCP.
Use of DNS dynamic updates in Windows 2000
Windows 2000 provides DNS dynamic update support for both DNS clients and DNS servers. For DNS servers, the DNS service allows dynamic updates to be enabled on a per-zone basis on each authoritative DNS server configured to be a standard primary zone or directory-integrated zone.
In Windows 2000, the A and PTR resource records for all DNS client computers are registered to DNS by default. In addition, domain controllers and other computers that provide services register the SRV (service) resource records in DNS. Because SRV resource records provide a way to resolve service names to IP addresses, registering them with DNS enables Windows 2000 client computers to locate domain controllers and other types of servers.

The full computer name is configured in the Network Identification tab of the System Properties in Control Panel. The full computer name is composed of the computer name plus the primary DNS suffix of the computer.
In addition to the computer's full computer name, you can configure the connection-specific DNS name and choose to register it with DNS. The following can be configured on the DNS tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) advanced properties for dial-up and network connections:
In this connection's DNS suffix, you can specify a DNS suffix that is used to create an additional DNS name that identifies a specific connection on the computer. The DNS name is composed of the computer name plus the connection-specific DNS suffix. Connection-specific DNS suffixes can also be configured to use DHCP options. Manually configured connection-specific DNS suffixes always take precedence over DHCP-provided connection-specific DNS suffixes. The connection-specific DNS suffix is not configured by default.
