One, what is Remote Desktop?

Remote Desktop is a service that Microsoft Corporation has launched to facilitate network administrators to manage and maintain servers. Introduced from the version of Windows Server Edition, the network administrator uses the Remote Desktop Connection program to connect to any computer on which Remote Desktop control is turned on, like running the program, maintaining the database, and so on, as if you were working on that computer. Remote Desktop in a sense similar to early Telnet, he can run the program to the server, and return to the remote control computer is only the image, the mouse keyboard motion change trajectory.

Second, what is Terminal Services?

Terminal Services exists only in Windows Server Edition and 2003, and no other system exists for this component. Terminal Services is not installed by default in the operating system and is required to be installed by adding the Remove Windows component. Terminal Services serves as a convenient way for multiple users to work with the server that opens Terminal Services on the network, all users operate on the same server, and all operations and operations are placed on that server.

Third, how to open Remote Desktop:

The way to turn on Remote Desktop functionality is simple, as we've described many times before. In Windows $ server and 2003, simply right-click on the desktop "My Computer" and select "Properties", locate the "Remote" tab in the Pop-up property Settings window, and then tick "allow users to connect remotely to this computer" at the Remote Desktop. (1) When this feature is turned on, other computers in the network can control and access the server through Remote Desktop Connection, communication, and so on.

Iv. How to open Terminal Services:

As mentioned above, Terminal Services is not installed in the system by default, so we have to install them manually. This article takes Windows 2003 as an example.

The first step: Install Terminal Services from the taskbar, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

Step Two: Add/Remove Programs window to the left Select Add Remove Windows Components. Locate the Terminal Server and Terminal Server Licensing in the component, before installing the system will give the configuration warning prompt "IE enhanced security configuration will greatly limit the users on the terminal server, whether to restore low security Configuration", we choose "yes". Because the security level of Windows 2003 browser is set too high by default, it is easy to restrict Terminal Services user permissions.

The third step: Select Terminal Server and Terminal Server Licensing, you can directly click "Next" to install.

Fourth step: The following is the introduction of Terminal Server installation program, very important. The content is as follows--this option installs the Terminal Server, which he can configure to allow multiple users to run the program at the same time. By default, only the local Administrators group can connect to this Terminal server. You need to add a user account that is not administrator rights to the local Remote Desktop Users group before users can connect to this Terminal server. If you only need to use managed remote desktops, do not install Terminal Server, which is used by default for Remote Desktop management. Authorization: To continue using Terminal Server after the 120-day grace period starting today, you must install a server to run Terminal Server Licensing.

Fifth step: Next, the instructor chooses the Terminal server operating mode, there are two security modes available to us, "full security mode" and "Relaxed Safe mode". The former can provide the most secure environment for the terminal Server, security is the best, but because of security so there are more restrictions, some of the previous platform design applications may not function properly. If you use this Safe mode for Terminal Server operations, you find that the actual limit is too restrictive to be modified to "relaxed security mode". Relaxed security mode has a lower level of security than the full security mode, but with a lot less restrictions, users can access critical registry and system file locations and run some applications designed for previous versions in this safe mode. Which security mode to use depends on the actual work needs to choose.

The sixth step: Next is to set up Terminal Server installation program, there are three kinds of licensing methods available to us, one is to use a license server, generally speaking, the company does not have a dedicated license server. The second is to use the automatic Search license server, which will automatically search the network license server, for the kind of license server is not fixed network applications more appropriate. The last one is "I will specify the license server within 120 days", this is our most frequently selected, that is, the first use of Terminal Services 120, after the purchase of a license to Microsoft Corporation, the establishment of the corresponding license server to achieve the purpose of authorization

Seventh step: Then select the server licensing mode, these options are not meaningful before purchasing an authorization license from Microsoft, "Per Device licensing mode" is an authorization for a device that can only be used on devices with an authorized license when using Terminal Services. The Per User licensing mode is the number of user licenses (CALs) that are purchased for a user to purchase a license, and how many users (accounts) are going to use Terminal Services.

V. The difference and connection between Remote Desktop and Terminal Services:

First we look at the same point, they are all components of the Windows system, are developed by Microsoft Corporation. Through these two components can realize the user at the other end of the network to control the function of the server, the operation of the server, running the program as if to manipulate their own local computer as simple, speed is very fast. But the difference between the two components is also very obvious--

(1) Remote Terminal Services allow multiple clients to log on to the server at the same time, whether the device authorization or user authorization requires a CAL Client Access authorization certificate, this certificate needs to be purchased from Microsoft Company, and Remote Desktop management is only provided to operators and administrators a graphical remote access to the Server Management interface ( Remote Desktop is not required for a CAL license, as seen from the interface with remote Terminal Services.

(2) Remote Desktop is completely free, and Terminal Services only 120 days of use, more than this free use period will need to purchase a license.

(3) The Remote Desktop allows up to two administrator login processes, and Terminal Services is unlimited, as long as you purchase enough licenses to think how many users can log in to a single server at the same time.

(4) Remote Desktop can only allow users to log on administrator rights, and Terminal Services do not have this limitation, what kind of users can be remote control server through Terminal Services, but after login permissions and their own permissions consistent only.

Perhaps some readers will say that since Remote Desktop is free, Terminal Services need to purchase licenses, simply use Remote Desktop is not finished? Terminal Access does not have this restriction, and remote Desktop can only allow 2 people to log on to the operating server, terminal Access does not have this limitation.
