Basic concepts of DHCP servers

Scope: the scope is the continuous range of all allocable IP addresses in a network. The scope is mainly used to define the IP address range of a single physical subnet in the network. Scope is the main means for servers to manage IP addresses assigned to network customers.

Super scope: A super scope is a set of scopes. It is used to implement multiple logical IP subnets in the same physical subnet. A super scope contains only a list of member scopes or subscopes. However, super scopes are not used to set specific scopes. Attributes of sub-scopes must be set separately.

Excluded range: the excluded range is the IP Address Sequence not used for allocation. It ensures that the IP address in this sequence is not allocated to the client by the DHCP server.

Address pool: After you define the DHCP range and the exclusion range, the remaining addresses are merged into an address pool. The addresses in the address pool can be dynamically allocated to clients in the network.

Lease: the lease is the length of time specified by the DHCP server. within this period, the client can use the obtained IP address. The lease is activated when the client obtains the IP address. The client needs to update the IP address Lease Before the lease expires. When the lease expires or is deleted from the server, the lease is stopped.

Reserved address: You can use the reserved address to create a permanent address lease. The reserved IP address ensures that the same IP address is always used by the specified hardware device in the subnet.

Option type: Option type is another customer Configuration Parameter assigned by the DHCP server to the DHCP workstation when a service lease is assigned. Frequently Used options include: default gateway IP address (routers), WINS server, and DNS server. Generally, these options are activated in each range. DHCP Manager allows you to set default options that apply to all ranges on the server. Most options are pre-set through RFC 2132, but you can use the DHCP manager to define and add custom option types as needed.

Option class: option class is a means of further hierarchical management of options provided to customers. When an option class is added to the server, customers of this option class can use a special option type during configuration. In Windows 2000, the client can also declare the class ID during server conversation. Class IDs are not supported for early DHCP clients. There are two types of options: service provider and customer.
