1 Desktop Introduction
1.1 ArcGIS for Desktop
ArcGIS for Desktop is a tool for creating and using information for GIS professionals, which is an on-board software PRODUCT on the ArcGIS product line. With ArcGIS for Desktop, you can implement anything from simple to complex GIS tasks, including cartography, geographic analysis, data editing, data management, visualization, and spatial processing. It can be purchased as three independent software products, each offering a different level of functional level:
·ArcGIS for Desktop Base edition:Provides comprehensive data usage, mapping, analysis, and simple data editing and spatial processing tools.
·ArcGIS for Desktop Standard Edition:Added advanced editing and management capabilities for Shapefiles and Geodatabase, based on the functionality of the ArcGIS for Desktop Foundation.
·ArcGIS for Desktop Premium Edition:is a flagship GIS desktop product that extends complex GIS analysis capabilities and rich spatial processing tools based on the ArcGIS for desktop Standard Edition.
Because of ArcGIS for Desktop Foundation, the structure of ArcGIS for desktop standard and ArcGIS for desktop premium is unified, so maps, data, symbols, map layers, custom tools and interfaces, reports and metadata, and so on, Can be shared and exchanged in these three products. The user does not have to learn and configure several different structural frameworks, and this easy entry is also for the above three versions.
Whether it's an ArcGIS for Desktop Foundation, an ArcGIS for desktop standard, or an ArcGIS for desktop premium, common applications have ArcMap and Arccatalog.
ArcMapis a major application in ArcGIS for Desktop, with all the features based on maps, including map mapping, data analysis, and editing.
ArcMap provides two ways to view data: Data View and Layout view. In Data view, you can symbolize geographic layers, analyze, and edit GIS datasets. Catalog content (Table of Contents) helps you organize and control the GIS data layers in the data frame. A Data view is a geographic display window of any dataset within a selected area. In Layout view, you can work with the map's pages, including data views and other map elements, such as scale bars, legends, North Arrow, and geo-reference.
ArcCatalogHelp users organize and manage all GIS information, such as maps, data files, geodatabase, spatial processing toolboxes, metadata, services, etc. It includes the following features:
· Browse and find geographic information
· Create data of various data types
· Record, view, and manage meta data
· defining, importing, and outputting geodatabase data models
· GIS data for searching and finding on LAN and WAN
· Manage Multiple GIS Services
· Manage Data Interoperability connections
Users can use Arccatalog to organize, find, and use GIS data, as well as to use standards-based metadata to describe the data. The GIS database administrator uses Arccatalog to define and establish geodatabase. The GIS server administrator uses Arccatalog to manage the GIS server framework.
Since ArcGIS 10, Arccatalog has been embedded in ArcMap.
1.2 Expansion Modules
ArcGIS for desktop offers a range of extension modules for three levels of products, enabling users to implement advanced analytics capabilities such as raster space processing and 3D analysis. These extension modules are usually divided into three categories according to functional use, namely, analysis class, Production class, Solution class.
The following is a list of extension modules.
